Hi there
SBS2011, sharepoint never used or setup, just has the system default setup.

Wss_search has high disk usage (constant reads) , according to the resource monitor
WSS_Search db is approx 500Mb , thats considerably bigger than the small sharepoint db

do I need to del this search db , is that safe to do ?

I have found 2 methods to do that , either via sharepoint admin (just stop the service & restart it)
or manually : stop the service, rename wss_search db * log , restart

any advice appreciated

I havnt found any definite fixes for this issue via google searches

This might point you in the right direction: http://www.itwalkthru.com/2011/11/sharepoint-2010-application-crawl-store.html

It appears that this process logs errors into a table in the database, and keeps them for 30 days - so if it's having trouble crawling for some reason, that database will blow up.

You probably need to get your SQL on, look at what the errors are, and fix them :)

If you want to reduce the disk load take a look at the indexing options. Probably continuous. For a small db with few updates maybe that is not needed and can be dialled down.

also check your antivirus isn't monitoring that part of the system - it can cause higher cpu and slow things down too.

Out of memory? That can cause high disk usage.
