NZ Based or overseas? Shared or VPS/Dedi? Windows or Linux? Space/Bandwidth requirements?

DreamHost seems to have a good rep around here (US based, shared, unmetered)

OpenHost has popped up in reviews recently favourably (NZ based, shared)

If you are a bit more adventuress you could try running your own server using AWS (the free tier is not bad), or find a VPS provider that suits (for NZ I use ZappieHost which is the cheapest you will find, there are plenty of more expensive options).

You need to provide more details. Are you  wanting good speed and reliability? Amount of diskspace and traffic needed? What software are you running, and what are the minimum specs you need it to run? Are you looking for cheapness etc.

Plus business or personal? Do you want eventual support or great support when you call or email? Do you need Linux or Windows, or does it not matter? What software are you going to run - Wordpress, etc?

Also they need to check support levels. Some provide both phone and email, but some nz ones I use can take days or longer to reply to email enquiries, and give priority to phone. But many people prefer to email for hosting, and not wait on hold for phone support. Good support is a must as technical issues will always occur at some point.

I've found webslice.co.nz to be fast, reliable and have good support.  I previously used Hostmonster in the states and it was ok at best.

Highly recommend SiteHost for excellent NZ based performance and support.

I also use LightningBase for a couple of Wordpress sites, and then run my own VPS at Sydney Vultr using EasyEngine to manage it

I used Dreamhost for a while a few years ago and then left due to their inability to fix major faults with their email system.  Then I went back to them a couple of years ago, only lasted a year before I let again due to yet more mail system outages and pricing (after discounts etc had expired) worked out quite expensive compared to other providers, so jumped ship again.

On the plus side, Dreamhost support to contact was good, just their actual resolution times seemed to be the problem.

+1 for SiteHost - We're slowly migrating all of our sites to them and they've been fantastic.  Great hosting options and really good support.  They also have an in-house control panel rather than using Plesk or cPanel which I find really intuitive.

I can't say enough good things about RimuHosting (disclaimer: link includes my referral ID). I've been with them for almost two years (and used them for a year before that at a digital agency I worked for).

Their support has been flawless, I usually just use their Live Chat (done through Campfire) and they're happy to help out with almost anything (within reason). For the times that the Live Chat isn't available, their email replies are never more than an hour away.
