SharePoint does tend to try and rip off your face at every opportunity.

Maybe that's why I saw an advert for a Datacom SharePoint admin earlier this month?

Funny.  A few years ago when consulting I did a design project for "important govt agency X" as a contractor for "vendor Y".  X added me to their shared workspace so I could access and update documents.  This was authenticated with RealMe.  Project finished, I left Y and moved on to other things.  About 2 years later I logged into RealMe for the first time since for some other personal reason and found I was still a member of X's shared workspace.  I could see, open, update all documents just like when I worked with Y.

I emailed X and Y immediately and let them know.  A few days later they finally got around to removing my access.

I'm sure this kind of thing happens all the time, this MSD/Datacom thing is no surprise.
