That really depends on what field you are in and who you are dealing with. I won a $150k services contract once because we put forward the names and certifications of the engineers that would be doing the work. We were twice the price of the nearest competitor so I had to ask why we were chosen, the other 3 bids included no information on who would do the work and what their qualifications were - even when asked.

 

Then there is the vendor perspective, if you are supplying gear you may get extra discount, preference or even simply access to gear that you would not if you didn't have the right certs.

It is true.

Bigger IT consulting shops want to be Microsoft "partners", which means a certain number of certified people.

By the way, ITIL is very popular, and pretty easy to pass.

The downside is ITIL courses are usually organized after your hired.
