People have given me recommendations for server providers who don't really provide application level support, or charge $150/hr for it. The charge probably isn't a huge issue, but I have to wonder if they have enough suitably qualified people to help with issues with MySQL, Wordpress, PHP, etc. Dreamhost who he's with isn't great, but they can generally help eventually.

@michaelmurfy any SSD storage is going to be too expensive, up to $200 a month just for the storage, plus $100 for the storage. That's why we're not really looking at AWS, unless he can use a cart that supports S3. S3 is 1/4 the price of Linode / Vultr.

Not really sure what he'll do. By default he'll keep paying US$180 / month to Dreamhost for a dedicated server.

@timmmay also have a look at this: https://www.servermania.com/vps-hosting.htm?table=two

I've got a server there and have found their support incredibly good. US based. I've got https://charlimarie.com hosted on my box as a VM if you want an example of speed.

That looks pretty good. Do they help with random things? eg "MySQL failed can you help me restore it" and "Wordpress is slow"? My customer will probably come to me for anything non-urgent, but I don't do urgent support so he does need some support included, or at least easy access to someone who can help even if they charge.

Yes they can do that also but you've got to pay a maintenance plan to them I believe. Best to open up a chat - I found them incredibly helpful with a few hours turnaround when I had problems. I believe their offices are based in Canada and the servers are based in multiple places (you can choose). 160ms latency to my box on my UFB connection and I can get the full 100Mbit from it (all I pay for).

My box has also been subject to DDOS attacks due to something it was hosting and they were quick to help mitigate it for me.
