I worked out the problem. What I thought I ordered is not what I actually ordered so I have an MX500 installed instead of a P1. A delightfully epic fail on my part. Such is life. Guess I will just have to try and win a P1 with this story instead :D

That’s probably why you see a performance increase.

There is a slight difference in I/o performance between a server board and a desktop board.

Correct. I currently am using an HPE Proliant ML110 (Xeon Silver 8 cores, 48 GB RAM, NVIDIA GPU) as a desktop/gaming machine. Boot was on an Intel 150 GB m.2 SSD and two 1 TB storage drives. Now I have the Crucial P1 as boot on a PCIe slot... Interesting the BIOS now allows for boot from NVMe drives on PCIe - something that wasn't allowed before on previous server generations. This tells a lot on the acceptance of these types of drives.

It depends on how you see it. The specs for this product say I am almost hitting full speed. It's a consumer version, and the price difference shows it. 

 

Still half of the speed but MORE than half of the price for the P1 - that's how I see it as a consumer.

Possible but there is a ceiling here - some people will have the money to pay more and get double while some people will have a much smaller budget but still want something with a performance better than old HDD. It all comes down to price points for performance. You may be prepared to pay more (are you?) while other will have limited money available.

If you only like to replace a HDD, one could go with Transcend SSDs or similar manufacturer. More or less any SSD is faster than spinning rust (HDD). I'm prepared to pay for the best price/use ratio, which is not necessarily the lowest or highest price.

I understand you are prepared to pay, similarly others will also be prepared to pay but to a certain point. I am not saying people have to buy the cheapest or the more expensive. We agree people have to seek the best price point - in your case your limit may be higher than others. That's all.
