Confirmed today through a Microsoft partner event that MS will indeed be building their own DCs, three of them across the Auckland area. Timing looks to be 24-36 months away.

How do we request a DC move to NZ? I only get an option for Australia in 365 portal.

Well Amazon is in the process of building (primevideo) CDN into The Datacom Orbit Drive datacentre (Auckland), so perhaps the rest of AWS will eventually follow. Orbit Drive is certainly at the top end of the datacentre's in NZ and is entirely appropriate for this task.

This is good that MS is actually going to build DCs for this. We have multiple customers located in Azure region in West Europe, East US, and Australia East who have legacy equipment inside the same DC as Azure, so its basically a cross connect for them.

Really hoping AWS steps it up and gives us an NZ Region announcement this week too :)

I did idly wonder if they might just buy an existing DC and tweak it to their standards. Because of our size, building a facility may not be worthwhile economically. That may be why the OIO is involved, due to the purchase of existing critical infrastructure?

Is it that expensive ? Have seen $100million+ mentioned. Same price as that Costco place, which is just an overgrown shop.

DCs are incredibly expensive to build. The services are generally built to a much higher standard than any other facility (they are certainly much more comprehensive than hospitals).

NZ data centres aren't built to a similar level as data centres internationally, most top tier DC operators want their facilities built with their own designs.

Microsoft will likely have a reference design ready to go which will then just rely on adaption to local supply chains and regulations.

I'm surprised how many inside sources at Microsoft there are with intimate knowledge of what is planned (plot twist, there's not a lot planned or confirmed...).

I doubt any existing datacenters or DC-providers are up to standard. CDC opening an NZ subsidiary is rather interesting as from an MS perspective, they've already ticked all the compliance/supplier boxes with Microsoft to be certified to build something that Microsoft can lease (Canberra Azure) so they're the one to watch for building a new DC. I'm expecting something built near Whenuapai.

Huge news regardless and will disrupt the local hosters immensely, I see Catalyst is already well into their disinformation campaign around legislation that Microsoft is bound by etc.

Also figured there'd be two as there'd be issues with Data Sovereignty in high-availability if it failed over to Australia because there wasn't a second datacenter in NZ.

The enterprise cloud project appears to be a product of, or at least informed by, a mysterious cloud proof of concept trial undertaken in 2018 called the "XIE platform" and involving Microsoft and Datacom.

Possibly, but I'd question the wisdom of using a pair of known DC locations for NZ Defence purposes. Wouldn't they be better off having a private cloud in distributed locations?
