Thanks @nzkc....

So I had another play today....... 20-04 loaded successfully as a Gen2 Virtual Machine with secure boot on my laptop

Trick is to change the Template from "Microsoft Windows" to "Microsoft UFEI Certificate Authority"

See screen dump below

@timmmay using a Gen2 Virtual Machine Ubuntu installed in half the time from using Gen1

Hyper-V is installing Ubuntu fine. It's incredibly slow - it took about 15 minutes to install on my laptop SSD, I decided to install on a spinning disk on my PC and it's got to have taken an hour with the disks chugging along.

I like that with a VM I can copy / move the VM to other PCs. I don't think I can do that with WSL.

That is a bit slow, it usually takes less than a couple of minutes for me.

Generally the drive I use for VMs is on its own controller/sata channel

The black screen issue sounds like a conflict likely because Hyper-V is enabled or running. I have the same thing currently.

as a general rule, one can generally only virtualise the hardware once.  When one installs hyper-v, the way I think of it is that it virtualises the hardware and turns ones primary OS into a guest.

I say generally, because windows server 2016 and later support nested virtualisation.

Sorry for lack of replies, busy today. I did notice it was a bit slow, I'll try gen2 at some point. Thanks all.

Thanks all. I've gotten Ubuntu working on Hyper-V in gen2 with enhanced sessions, wasn't difficult. I wish they'd put the note about "turn off auto login" at the start though - maybe they did and I just didn't read it.

Anyway, I think this will be better than Virtualbox, as it's a feature of the OS and seems more stable. Thanks again for the help! :)

Odd thing... I have an Ethernet adapter "My Virtual Switch", which in task manager everything seems to use now instead of my actual Ethernet card. Probably not an issue, but it's weird.

Its Just a NAT adapter, you can change it to bridge if you like

The odd thing is everything seems to use it even outside Hyper-V. Web browsing, Dropbox, etc. It's obviously going through my main internet connection, it's just showing up as under that. Doesn't matter.
