I have just installed the new Google Drive for Windows App.  For some reason I now have my original Google Drive folder with around 10 Gb of files, (I subscribe to Googles 100Gb plan), and Drive has created a new G Drive  and inside that it has shortcuts pointing back to my original folder containing  the 10 Gb files. This new Drive shows a size of 100Gb and then says content is 82 Gb with 18Gb free. I can sort of see what Google is trying to do but  I don't really want  a duplicated structure of my original Google Drive Folder.

Has anyone else had this experience and can I delete the 100Gb drive that google has so kindly created

With the old Google Drive, the files on your local drive where basically a copy of the files in Google Drive. You could access these files without Google Drive. Not really secure & potentially a lot of space used up locally if you decided to sync everything in Google Drive.

With the new Google Drive Filestream, files are in their own cache & encrypted. Now you have to load Google Filestream to access the files.

  • Having said that, would check the configuration / location of the file cache before deleting.
  • Then, I'd delete a few files from the old location & see if the changes replicate into Google Drive. If they do, simply restore from the Recycle Bin or better yet, start with some dummy files.
  • If the deletions don't replicate to Google Drive, I'd clean up myself & delete the old local copy.
