Yup, I saw you on there :-).  In terms of the responses, you're dealing with a bunch of guys who tend to be some way down the autism spectrum and whose diplomatic skills aren't the greatest, I cringed a bit at some of them.  It's not negative, they're just pretty direct and blunt.  You may want to drop a hint about how painful it is to use a screen reader to set up a server and so you're relying on ones run by others, which will give them a bit of context and maybe moderate the bluntness a bit.

Huh, we parsed them as neurotypical, ngl, mostly cause we're autistic ourself, and the kind of blunt, like, hyperfocus on "DO THE PRODUCTIVE THING!" was... yeah. Like hello, we have a thing we're doing, mostly so that we don't depression spiral... eesh. We ended up just unsubscribing from that list, reminded us a lil too much of LKML and the time we tried to submit a patch to the kernel when we were like 15

it's honestly kind of impressive how this country has managed to erase real computers out of its memory. Kind of goes along with how quickly this country (1) crawled up Microsoft's ass and (2) looks at cloud vendors like they can do no wrong, and at physical servers like they are the very bringer of all the evils of the world.

I know several large government departments and large private companies in the finance space that actively still use SPARC/Solaris as key parts of their infrastructure with critical apps and databases, so it's not entirely true that the entire country has embraced x86_64 etc.

However, when I asked my contacts, none of them had any older/unused servers left - and what had been decommissioned over the last few years had gone to RemarkIT; hence that suggestion. Pity they were unhelpful....

not a single Sun SPARC Enterprize T5220, or Sun Fire V240, or Enterprize M3000, anywhere in this country? Not a single one?

Speaking from experience, when we decommissioned our V440s a few years back I asked the recycler what the market for them was (as they paid a premium for them compared to other old x86 gear) and they said they pretty much send it all to Australia as there is a much bigger market of enterprises who still have business critical apps running on them so will pay a premium for working spares.

Damn. Gods a V440 would have been awesome to have. So should we, honestly, just give up? Cause that's... depressing. Like.... we guess we're just kind of ... stuck? Unless we pay $(($MSD_BENEFIT*5)) to get one from Australia?

You can always get something on ebay. Looks like about $800NZ for a v240 including shipping

The problem is Linux took over everything for clearly defined reasons. Running Solaris cost too much to maintain and no one really wanted the hardware, so e-waste it is. I remember running Linux on E250/E450 and then benchmarking against cheap X86, well lets just say the Sun boxes did not do well.

Nah, we see that, and up till quite recently we wouldn't've wanted this quite as badly but ouch, Linux is... a mess, lately. orchestration and automation and binary files that aughta be text and eleventy billion distros trying to be the be-all and end-all of everything and systemd and oh dear goddess Inanna, do not want.

Oh and also nixOS. NixOS, with all due respect (I.E. none) can die, in, a, fire.

This leads to an interesting followup question, a lot of noise has been made about codes of conduct in projects and on mailing lists, of which a good amount seems to be just virtue signalling.  For example one was recently posted to a tech list that didn't seem to need it but that did pointedly ignore the primary reason why people were discouraged from participating on the list, which several people pointed in the midst of all the self-congratulatory back-patting that it triggered (there were no more responses after the issue was pointed out).

Do you think a CoC would have helped you on the list, and if so what form should it take?  It would be useful to know for future reference.

That's good to know.  We still maintain Sparc versions of software but it's not been clear for awhile now whether anyone still cares.
