Quicken may be what your after but requires a bit of learning.
One off cost unless you want to upgrade to the new version each year. I think the new 2012 should be coming out soonish...

The accounts ladies at work seem to like using Attache Pro after using MYOB for years,

http://www.attachepro.co.nz

Seems to add up the cents and pay me on time every fortnight so can't be half bad.

+1 for Xero, just saves so much time (which in the end is money).

We actually switched from Attache Pro to Xero earlier this year at work, have to say Xero blows it out of the water for ease of use.

DonGould: * Ability to import customer transaction data from csv or something open or have data injected so that invoices can be generated and or customer records across systems kept in sync

Xero has a fully functional API which you can connect to, to push and pull data.  We've got quite a few customers who we've interfaced with Xero, not only NZ based, but also in Australia and the UK.

Xero all the way!

Hi Cathrine,

Let me start by qualifying this a little for your interest...

I am not using the software at present.  It's the one system in all the systems that I'm not actually setting up.  The person who is setting it up has used MYOB extensively and was planning on using Quicken because he uses that for a number of other sets of accounts.  However I'm the one that gets final say over all systems the company is using in this instance.

There was extensive discussion on the product choice.

Feedback I got from Geekzone was the over riding influence and I will explain...

1. I asked about free trial issues - MF responded within 30 minutes with to high light two key points - Information on the web site is good enough that the answer to a basic question could be found quickly (even though someone else looking could not find it and we know that MF is very skilled web research) but more importantly, other people in the community are behind your product to the point that they will even do 'dummy/idiot' research for people and post quickly.  If yours was a product that people here did not like then they'd just ignore the questions if they weren't going to just rubbish your product (which they will and do do often with products they don't like!).

2.  Muppet 'use office' - Interestingly relevant comment because for one of my other companies I do exactly that.  As a proficient MS Access database programmer, it was simply quicker and faster to tailor a custom application to manage our accounting needs give a number of complex factors.

However I did want something that I didn't have to own and a number of people pointed to the ability to extend Xero - Nate  (ps Nate, it's a disclosure, not a disclaimer ;) ) That impressed on me how easy it would be to find local support at a very technical level, which given that I have a number of custom solutions in the company that will need to feed into the accounting system at some point, that seems of great value.

3.  You showed up on list - I like companies who put social media representatives out there and are happy to deal in the public space.

4.  Users defended a number of comments I made.  This tells me a number of obvious things.  They're thought about your software, they've been though the same processes that I'm working though and they're happy enough with it to defend it.  That to me is a good sign.

Other factors the also influenced us...

1.  Locally developed and owned and small business focused - We're setting up a locally owned, small business and we wanted to support something local and seemed focused on our kind of business.

2.  Your companies use of technology impressed us.  The use of webenars (sp?) to inform new users about system features and provide training.  As we're building an internet business our selves, it really does only seem logical to support other businesses doing great things in our sector.

3.  Cool factor - some of the features, such as invoicing off your smart phone, have cool factor.  Cool factor is extremely important to me.  I don't honestly know anyone who likes accounting software and even less that like doing GST returns and paying tax.  So an application with some cool, such as being about to use your mobile to make invoices and your tablet to watch the training gets a tick.

4.  Web based - we're not a 'single location' based business.  So being able to gain access to our systems from where ever we can find a web browser is important to us.

5.  People - Rod is a clear kiwi star at present and is working to bring us under sea cables that we really need in New Zealand, so we're happy to be supporting that team.  From what we can tell, there is a group of stars coming out of Wellington at present and we wanted to support that trend.

Anyway, I hope you guys find this feedback helpful to your business.

hairy1: I have just started using Wave Accounting. All cloud based. Imports my Kiwibank transactions but doesn't link yet.

Only does accrual based gst reports but I have been very impressed. The price is good.... free!

Cheers, Matt.

 Dear Matt,

I am a forced beginner in accounting for my small engineering company and hope a software will help me.
Thank you for your valuable idea to use Wave Accounting
(http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=86&topicid=91430&page_no=1#532771)

I have taken a look at Wave Accounting and I like it so far. But they seem not to be a NZ company, aren't they?

Therefore, could you please advise how did you make your GST return? Did you customise it or what?

Thank you and Very Best Regards
Eugene

MATT's ANSWER:

Hello Eugene,

They are not a New Zealand company however they do have a sales tax report.I run this report when gst is due and it gives the correct details.
I configured gst as a 15% sales tax.

Only real issue is that the gst report is accrual based so if you do cash reporting you have to make sure any invoices which haven't been paid are deducted from the report.

Cheers, Matt.

muppet: Excel or Openoffice.

Attn Everoone who works in Excel or OpenOffice% Please HELP!

I am not a accountant and not a programmer.

To organise things, I use Excel and Open Office -- exactly like respectable Muppet recommended in http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=86&topicid=91430&page_no=1#533100

Could anybody please advise how to find any of few words in Excel:

Currently I have a working cell:
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("Caltex",D120)),C120,0)

And I need something like:
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH(("Caltex" OR "BP" OR "Shell"),D120)),C120,0)

Could anybody please advise on the way of writing such a string and maybe a syntax or where could I read about it?

THANK YOU!

I think you should create a new topic for the Excel question as it is not related to this one.
