Judging what NZ RRP should be based on the cost of importing individual units is a flawed method to start with, the shipping costs per unit would be reduced to fractions of that for us to individually import.

I agreed it is flawed but whilst shipping costs per unit would come down to a few dollars instead of $50, buy individually shipping we are getting away with the 15% GST when under $400, which would amount to $60 which is ten more dollars than the shipping cost.

The intensity of the debate about price had me checking out the sub 10-inch competition, and strengthened my regard for the Nexus 7. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 has the same resolution in an 8.9 inch screen, so obviously considerably lower ppi, and still runs Honeycomb. The Galaxy 7.7 is nearly twice the price, and also runs Honeycomb, although ICS updates are underway now, it seems. Even at $440, the Nexus 7 is the best quality low-end tablet available, unless one wants to go the Chinese no-name route.

Given the lag to market, it's hard to see anyone coming up with a competitor at this price point for a while, especially against the Nexus 7's display and OS. Maybe there'll be something to challenge it in time for Xmas, but for now, it has cornered a productive niche, I think. Especially if Google opens up the rest of Play to us.

Snap, I did the same.  Anything comparable in NZ seems to be more than $500 on a persual of Pricespy excluding the Chinese cheapies and I suspect that comparision is not too dissimilar overseas.  On that basis $439 is a good deal.  Yes it has its pros and cons but ultimately though it still comes down to what you want to use it for.

Personally I see it as a portable way to surf the web, listen to podcasts, check email & RSS feeds, and do some e-reading.  I don't tend to need a lot of storage so the "no SD card slot" is not a biggie for me.   It is also a plus that as a Nexus it will get quick Android updates (I presume).

Edit: I removed a Wikipedia reference that somehow made its way into my post

Hopefully they sell it duty free at the Aussie airports...if they did, that may end up the cheapest option (assuming you have someone coming back through Aussie that can pick one up for you!).

I'm thinking you'd get without the gst which would take 10% of the $320 AUD price, ending up around $360 nzd.

Or you simply buy it in the shops, don't open it and claim the gst back as you leave the country.

How? Do they just give you the cash back at the border?? :-s

I'm currently on the notification list Clove.co.uk has, as I reckon that is the best way to get an 8GB one.

oh dear bad news, Clove updated their page, so now they've given VAT inc and ex prices. Seems like the original price they'd mentioned was already exclusive of VAT, which means it is NZ$356 to get to NZ for the 8GB model.

I've been doing this but they don't seem to reply.  And all I had asked was: Are we getting the Nexus 7?

Bit disappointed with @googledownunder to be honest.  Get more info from Geekzone (not a surprise)

has anybody here used MyUS?
http://www.myus.com/

saw it mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28136376
seems to be reasonable (if going to Sweden is comparable to shipping to NZ?! oh never mind... spotted he didn't include shipping to his country which is forty bucks or so for NZ)

Hi guys,

If anyone wants to have a play with one of these, if you are in Auckland and available tonight, come join our GDG Auckland meetup (shameless plug for the local chapter of Google's Developer Groups, formerly Auckland GTUG).  We have all the I/O gadgets for hands-on demos including the Nexus 7, Q, Jellybean on the GN, ADK 2.0 and more.  Our group is primariliy aimed at developers, tonight our focus is actually on the ADK and Q, but we'll take a look at some of the features of the 7 and Jellybean over the coming months.

Please join the group and RSVP if you intend to come so we have an idea of numbers.

$40 bucks less and I would be compelled beyond reason to buy it.

Being over the $400 mark just seems too much, still compelling none the less though

What are you planning to do with the other $40?

I think its a good buy, but I want to see what ways there are to get an 8GB version and if it isn't too hard to do then how much. If all else fails I have a friend coming over from The States towards the end of the year.    I don't need a tablet so there isn't a lot of urgency.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?
