Those cables are for flashing and unlocking the phones, not for charging them. I can recall only 3 samsung plugs on all the many samsungs I have had. Many of them pre-date USB as a charging source in any case.

More valid to pick on would be nokia who have used the same plug on many chargers but you will find that you damage the phone in some cases, or else have a charging animation but nothing happen to actually charge in other cases.

I find the opposite. I see iTunes as a one stop management hub, easy to use. Most of my content is not purchased. I find it easy to manage, backup, sync, and convenient to clone if upgrading to another device, or to have some content on multi devices.  IMO

Im constantly handed iphones/pods at work and being asked to copy music onto them, no can do without losing what is on there doesnt go down well with people. The problem with being the guy with the massive music collection. Trying to explain to people how to use a USB flash drive to put it onto their computer which is normally full only to put it onto their iPhone is like explaining brain surgery.

Fair call. I think many users blanked out the collections early on. Its easy to use once you understand it, but if you end up supporting others who don't familiarise themselves with the basics, I can see your point.

Its great that you find it easy to use but perhaps thats because you have a good understanding of it?

Personally I think Apple intentionally made it over complicated when it comes to syncing devices.

In some ways its in their best interest to make it as hard as possible to transfer music between devices to reduce the amount of music sharing which would be detrimental to their iTunes business model.

If you give grandma two devices, one iPhone and one S3 say.

Tell her that you envy her music collection and if she would be so kind as to copy the new Bob Dylan album onto the devices you have handed her.

Now when grandma connects up the S3 (using an industry std micro usb cable) up pops the box on her computer 'device found' etc and all she does is opens the folder, then after one or two clicks is in the Music folder of the android device and copying tracks into the phone.

When she tries to do the same with the iPhone she firstly gets a message that she doesnt have itunes (which is really Soundjam MP not an Apple created product)  installed....

After download and install she connects up to be told that the device is not associated with the itunes/computer account etc and it will replace everything on the device.....

Now this is going the official method, of course we could suggest using Easytrans etc for transferring music without all the crazy hassle of doing things the  'Apple way'.

There seems to be a fair amount of punters who would agree on this issue just from a google search.

I can agree in part. It's easier and quicker on Android, for sure. Yes, I understand iTunes, although never read the manual, and yes it can appear complicated. But, I find it, after minimal learning, to work well. Not as quick and easy as you, but still not a drama by any stretch. In any case, each to their own, from my experience it works well for me, and the backup and restore to a new device is great. And this also covers mutli devices.

I have a lot of content, much of it non iTunes acquired, so I'd say I have the least convenient files to manage, but works well for me.

Thats the main thing. If the end user is happy with what they have be it the best in class or not the rest is almost irrelevant.

Yep webup. A criticism I have is that if you look at Apple being the revenue generator and ease of use, iTunes works prefectly for those that ONLY get their content from iTunes or the Appstore. In that case, you dont need to know anything, itunes takes care of everything. BUT, not all of us want that.. I guess thats fine for geeks, and ideal for non literate users, but not all of us want to play the "Only buy/acquire from Apple way" Pros and cons, at least for me

Using Windows Explorer as you do would be good, although I would miss the convenience of cloning an iDevice when upgrading, or restoring, and managing multi devices in one place, Again pros and cons

My Father bought an iPad and likes its ease of us and design however he struggles with content.

It irks him how hard it seems to be for non iTunes purchased content to be used when your tech level is rather low.
He doesn't understand why he cant just copy a movie he has on his laptop to the ipad etc.He uses an android phone and is thinking of replacing the ipad with a android based tablet.

While replacing the ipad with an android based tablet would be a good idea.. I would like to suggest not buying a really cheap android tablet which would spoil his android tablet experience.

Buy something with decent specs and I am sure it would still be cheaper than the ipad plus a decent specs tablet would give him a far better experience..

Non iTunes content is imported via iTunes, under FileSharing. You browse to the folder on the PC and import ino the app.  I use VLC Player although thats not there anymore, but there are many others that support all formats. I use Goodreader for PDFs, etc.

But, if you end up being the fixer upper, perhaps may be easier to get a nice Android tablet?

You have to give Samsung the sense of humour award this week. I love this quote from the Galaxy S 4 article on stuff (that they stole from mashable):

http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/7695686/Samsung-Galaxy-S4-coming-February

"The S4 will see some external changes but retain its popular rectangular shape with rounded corner concept," the official said.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
