redstorm: I got mine back on Sunday, New Motherboard. eMMC brick check reports SANE chip now.

Came flashed with 4.1.2 FYI



What version were you running before it failed..?

Also how long did you have it before it failed..?

I had updated to 4.1.1 and never got around to updating to 4.1.2 hence why mine died on 298 days.

Well my S3 was updated to 4.1.2 when Vodafone sent out their update and it had been sweet since then but now it has restarted 4-5 times and locked up twice in the last 3 days. The signs don't look good!

Does anyone know of any preventive measures?

After my S3 died Sunday morning (RIP, 270 days) I found this thread and thought I may as well add my story.

My S3 was running 4.1.1... to lazy to update and now looks whats happened... anyway, put my phone on to charge and in the morning it was dead, no charging led, won't turn on, can't enter recovery or download or connect to pc.

That day I spoke to a Samsung sales person and they were very helpful, recognised the problem and recommended the quickest way to get my phone looked at was to drop it directly to the service centre.  

So today I gave the service number for NZ a call and got the most rude and unhelpful call centre operator I've ever spoken to.  As soon as I mentioned the idea of SDS he told me I didn't know what I was talking about, that the issue was not recognised by Samsung and I should take my device to the store or carrier to have them look at it.

Needless to say I will be taking the phone to the official Samsung sales people.  Will be interested to see what their customer service is like.  In the meantime I hear the Nexus phones are really well supported and HTC make high quality gear...

Its a shame companies reputations can so often hinge on the poorly paid and usually under trained call centre operators, but that is their own fault I guess.

I came over to Samsung from HTC after several issues with my first HTC phone. I havent had an issue with Samsung so far, but thats luck of the draw.

I know what you mean, but I expect excellent customer service from industry leaders like Samsung. In the end a single bad experience is not enough to fairly judge the whole company or the NZ customer service.

Yes it is definitely the companies fault, and they deserve all the flack they get.

I was running 4.1.2 (rooted/ running the official firmware although). I took it to the vodafone store in queen st (after cleaning up the binary counter and making sure the download mode reads official/ count = 0). The guy there told me that he's never heard of this issue before (I'd assume that he didn't want to scare off the customers there). 

I got back the phone after 4 days (pretty impressive !). The repair notes read PBA RPLCD with some other wierd notes - I guess they're the tests carried out after replacing the PBA. No problems after that.

Thats interesting, samsung has been saying that 4.1.2 is the "fixed" version and you still had the Sudden Death..

Interesting, the guy in the Vodafone shop in Albany knew all about SDS when I talked to him about it, but I got the impression that he had done his own research rather than it being company education.

it doesn't sound like SDS if he was able to reset counter as SDS is just that, dead but you can get into download mode.
Also it may have been beyond the fix in the 4.1.2 rom's, I wouldn't be too concerned as from all the reading on XDA it seems the fixes are working for the majority.
