I have an HTC 1V  (running Ice Cream Sandwich IIRC)
Now that I've got a 2GB plan from Telecom, I've started tethering my Dell laptop so I can work from home (in the boondocks).
I've noticed that:
1) Opera Turbo doesn't work (should be the ideal situation to use it to shrink pages)
2) FTP won't connect
3) PuTTY won't connect.

I presume the last two are unsupported or blocked ports. Does anyone know how to open them up?

Richard

My guess would be the Telecom APN is the limiting factor, not your phone.

Try setting your APN to 'direct' or similar, instructions/details here http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=32983

Thanks folks,

The problem is I can't find an APN entry on my phone's settings. There's a "More" entry under Wireless and Networks, and its sub-items are Usage, Media Link HD, VPN, Portable Hotspot and tethering, Wi-Fi direct (which appears to be peer-peer) and Wi-fi direct settings.

There should also be a Mobile Networks item in that menu. Inside the Mobile Networks menu, there's an item named Access Point Names which is where you want to be.

ok, found it (I thought pressing that label only turned my mobile network on or off :-)

I'm currently using Telecomdefault and the only other option is TelecomMMS - will that one do the trick?

If you hit the hardware menu button (if you have one) there should be an option to add an APN, in which case you just fill in the details for telecomdirect as per the forum links above
