bradstewart: If this person has installed an 'update' then they must have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery.

Indeed - and if you can boot to recovery, then you have lots of options - one other option might be to do a nandroid backup, then factory reset and restore the user's apps, SMS, and whatever else they need using a backup/restore tool that allows you to selectively restore from a nandroid, such as Titanium backup...

bradstewart: If this person has installed an 'update' then they must have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery. The best thing to do would be to power on with vol down and boot into the recovery and use adb to pull the build.prop file from /system and find what they have flashed.

If it's an aosp based ROM on top of a sense one then there is a small chance of fixing it by flashing a custom sense ROM via sideload that matches the Android version of the original. It's only a slim chance as the two differ so much that the upgrade/optimisation process after flashing would likely to irreparable damage to /data.

No way this customer installed anything like that, it was either something official, or perhaps just an app update. The guy whos phone it is, can barely use it, he would have zero chance of loading a custom loader etc.

Yeah, it needs a custom recovery or root for an app.

Gave up in the end. Another plus for rooting and custom roms!

Anyways. What do people use to backup their phones to their PC's?

I just use Titanium Backup for Settings + AppData and sync that to my DropBox account. I've also got DB camera backup turned on.

For automated Message/Call Log backup to the cloud there is G Cloud Backup. That would be better for a non-power user.

Disconnected my phone from charging about 10:30am yesterday, hardly used it since then and had about 20% battery left when I went to charge again this morning at about the same time.. only to find it wouldn't charge. Tried using a different cable, plugging into the wall and computer, didn't make a difference. HTC One rep suggested factory reset which I did, still nothing. Once phone had died it started charging with a strange screen. Booted phone up again, no charging. Shut phone down, no charging. Seems it can only charge once the battery is completely dead.

Short of returning it to the Telecom store and potentially being without a phone for a couple weeks (4G micro sim...), anything else I can do?

I've just started having charging issues today too. Mine will charge while powered off though. Are you having any other issues like random portrait/landscape switching or car mode opening itself up?

No, I did get that happening a couple of months ago. Definitely remember the car mode haha, was very annoying. Think it just went away by itself eventually.

bradstewart:
I have also created a full return to stock flashable zip + stock recovery which I'll host somewhere if anyone is interested in that.

Did you end up hosting this anywhere? I'm going to have to take my phone back for repair by the looks of things.

It's a page or two after that post you quoted. I marked it as a post answer but someone keeps clearing it.

Just cleaned my usb port on the phone out with a toothpick. So much junk in there it wasn't funny. All my charging issues seem to have disappeared.

I don't think i'm getting 3G usage on my phone.. i thought i used to prior to about a month ago, but now wondering if i just never paid much attention to it. The "3G" symbol with the up and down arrows only ever shows up for about a second or two, with only the up arrow lit as if it's trying to make a connection, then swaps out for the "H" which stays relatively permanently after that. Does that mean i'm not getting 3G?

Phone is from the warehouse, was delivered with a Telecom pre-pay card but it's only ever had my Vodafone sim in it. This persists independent of my location (was having the same issue in Tauranga, now living in Hamilton)

HSPA is superior to 3G, so wherever you have access, you will always get the best possible service.
