Just been on the telecom live chat help thingy to see what the chances are of pre ordering the One, they told me they weren't doing pre orders but had been advised the target date was the 3rd of April....

Thanks for this info, April 3 isn't too bad. I bought my One X from Clove UK but I'm inclined to get a One locally so it's easier to exchange if necessary. Wish they were making a variant with LTE bands functional in both NZ and the US, but I may be out of luck.

And yet Noelleeming have the phone on their site now and taking orders for it. Does that mean the people who buy it from them now, wont get it until May

well thats a bit misleading on their site then. Saying special order.  No mention about delays or waiting that long.  Special order you would expect a week or maybe 2 but not 6 weeks.
Actually what makes it even more misleading is taking full price now. When on their site they are advertising the Samsung Galaxy S4 for pre order with $50 deposit.  So by that you could believe the HTC One is available now since they take full price now and only deposit for S4

No guessing required. People always will be like sheep so the S4 will sell.  If HTC One had Samsung on instead, it would sell like hotcakes. Just human nature until Samsung do something really wrong with a model

So... Mobicity reckon mid to late April now... It's starting to feel more like vaporware than a phone release. *le sigh*

I have an S2 and skipped a generation with the S3. I now want to upgrade and have been thinking about the S4 and HTC One. Although the S4 will be a great phone, I'm not keen on the plasticy look - I love the look and feel of my son's iPhone 5. For that reason I really liked the look of the Xperia Z but have been put off by the screen reviews.

So I have decided on the HTCO with the machined aluminium body and overall great specs. Would prefer: (a) that it would take external memory but that's not necessarily a biggy for me, (b) the 64GB version but not sure how long it will take for that to appear, and (c) black version. It could be quite a wait for a black 64GB so will need to balance impatience etc on all this.

One reservation I have is that it's not clear what type of finish the black is. If it's anodised that would be great (can you get black anodising?). If it's a coating, just wondering whether the coating will get scratched/rubbed where the phone rests on its curved back and aluminium might show through the black. With a phone this cool-looking and with Al body I would be hoping to use it without a case. Guess I could use a Barely There case - I have one on my S2 and it's pretty good.

Another quandary is whether to order from Clove or buy here. If I'm really waiting for a black 64GB it may show up on Clove well before locals have it available.

I can't say what the coating actually is, but here's a link to a guy giving one a scratch with a key and it holds up nicely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EWqPpYVE08&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Thanks and, well, yeah, that looks fairly conclusive. So tick another box - just getting better and better.

I took the plunge and ordered ONE X from Noelleeming. They have charged me already but no expected delivery date.  I know I know I cold probably get cheaper if waited.   I had thought about no microsd slot and then realised that my previous phones with 16GB storage I never filled it up and didnt resort to the micro card so 32GB with no microSD slot shouldnt be too much problem.
Another thing removable battery.  Honestly havent replaced a battery in a phone yet and never needed a spare so realistically non removable battery ends up not big deal for me.
