Damager: Anyone on Telecom received the 4.2.2 update? Since Voda and I think 2Degrees have?

Unless you are talking about the update which allows the apps to be saved to SD card S4 came with 4.2.2 out of the box

Nah there's some other enhancements to 4.2.2  like some work on the camera, and fixes to Touchwiz (i think)

correct i downloaded the australian ROM so have been using it for a month now. Flashed the Vodafone ROM when it came out.

This may be a simple question... but how do you change the text message volume on the S4? None of the settings -> my device -> sound options seem to work, neither does the volume control on the phone. Do you really need to buy an app to set the text message alert volume? All reports found via google suggest you do.

If found it strange that the txt alert tone was in the txt app not the central app, took me ages to find it. Android is a bit randomly designed at times.

It's part of the notifications volume. The speech bubble with the ! in it.
Or after you've pressed the volume button, tap the icon on the screen, that should show up all your volumes. Are you sure you're not using the "simple" home screen?

Why? When you can change the sound in pretty much any app that has alerts, it would make for a crowded settings page... better to have individually in each apps settings.

Thanks blakamin, very helpful. On full it's super loud, on low it's still quite loud. I took my tones into audacity and took them down -12db and they're much better now.

Makes sense about notification in apps too. Funny though that calls and text are the two main things on phones, at least historically, I figured text would be treated more as a first class function not just another app. They way they did it makes sense since it was probably designed by software developers, not user interface people. That's one thing Apple got right, even though I don't much like iPhone OS that much personally.

The thing with that tho is that there's so many messaging apps! Every manufacturer has a different one.
Googles own one doesn't have a line-return so I don't use the stock one.
When you can customise EVERYTHING, it makes sense not to have it all hogging the "settings" menu..
When my Mrs had an iphone, that settings bit drove me nuts! lol

I never thought of replacing the SMS app. It seems to work fine, what do you use and how is it better?

I told my fiance if she gets a smart phone best get one I understand, ie Android, not the windows phone as I can't help with that. I think she's a little put off that it's taken me quite a bit of time (not really trying at all) to do things like find how to set an SMS tone and volume, and that there are no ring profiles still really leaves me wondering what Google think they're doing. Also that I bought tasker to automate stuff that should be built in.

Can anyone recommend a good lightweight email program? Gmail doesn't do other servers. Built in mail is annoying in that there's no "check all email accounts" button. K9 mail works but it's a bit ugly.

It's free too. Do you have to remove the default sms client, or is one just set as the active one?

Kaiten Mail isn't ugly. Have only used is sporadically as I go in and out of love with Gmail though so can't really comment on it's advanced functions.

Thats strange I thought the built in mail did, I have 3 email a/c's but all sync manually but I have it on 'combined inbox' hit the sync button and it seems to do the lot, well I thought it did but can't check as no emails.

It's worth a look. The version I'm used to is on my Android 3.1 or 3.2 tablet, from memory there's no "check email" button on the combined inbox screen.

I'm on 4.2.2 so not sure if there was an update but expect there was. Its ver 4.2 so the application manager tells me.

you don't have to remove the default sms client. you can just set go sms pro to be default, either as a one time only or permanently until you decide otherwise.

i use a very much older version of go sms pro, with the ability to backup SMS/MMS to local rather than cloud. i've found the newer versions with too much adware and bloat features that i've never used.
