On xda go to deemjay ' s (not sure if spelling is correct) stock rooted thread. Grab one of the 4.2 roms and try that.

If that fails, get philz recovery (I think the latest ones has problems with current roms so get 6.09 I think it is) and a custom rom. If you really want stock deemjay had Odin3 and cwm versions.

yes i have flashed it again. maybe i had to unroot before flashing?

yes i have scoured that page but don't know which ROM will suit me best
EDIT: it doesn't seem any of them has a .tar or .md5 file so i can't use them as i can't get into recovery. i've also flashed all kinds of recovery inc stock recovery but can't get into it.

Right, back on a computer so can copy and paste and type better...

Oh so all old ROMs seem to have dissapeard - Sammobile will be your best bet.

Before flashing Philz recovery or the above ROM, turn the phone off and take the battery out for a little bit then go into Recovery.  If you can get into Philz recovery - give it a full wipe, then try an Odin3 flash of a stock ROM.

i can't get into recovery.

this is what i noticed - immediately after successful flashing of ROM, the top left very small font letters say recovery booting or something like that followed by the green android and his belly with blue atoms flying around

is that normal?

this preceeds the boot into the telecom logo where it then gets stuck

anyway i don't think this is fixable ... might wait a few months for the s5 :D

Try this - when flashing using Odin3, untick auto reboot. Flash the ROM (give it plenty of time to finish). pull the battery then boot back into download mode and flash it again (manual reboot once more).

Some people have had to do this when flashing modems - worth a shot

I'll just pipe up and say that I killed an S4 while trying to flash modems. I don't know if it's the cause or not but I had not had any trouble flashing any of the dozen or so ROM's onto it, but the 4th modem killed the efs partition so now it's just a glorified music player.

Be very careful, make sure you have an efs backup, and be very careful.

Joker, can you get into download mode? If so, go get the stock Telecom ROM from samfirmware and reflash it then start the process again. I was able to flash a stock rom (after similar things) and then a third party ROM before realising that it was my efs partition.

I've backed up my EFS partition in two or three different ways. I did it using an app on the S4, and also using an app on the PC. I can't remember the details right now, but I can check at home tonight if anyone wants to know. Google finds them though.

I think (could be wrong) you can install a custom recovery from odin or direct from your current recovery. I just tend to use google to find a guide and follow it.

you have probably lost root access by flashing stock therefore can't flash custom recovery.

go to CF autoroot and floow instructions its pretty simple just load into odin should take less than a minute.

then choose a custom recovery, I have been using the touch CWM for agesz and its fine for me , some suggest philztouch just make a choice and flash through odin as per the instructions.

from there you should have recover and flash what you want BUT if you are going from 4.2 to another build like 4.3 you need to full wipe otherwise you will have problems. You can dirty flash on same builds and get away with it, well mostly but not a good practioce and most devs or helper won't help if you have dirty flashed.

I tried flashing cf auto root and then cwm recovery but can't get in. Maybe i didn't read instructions properly. S4 is definitely not as friendly as s2 which and flashed and restored like changing coffee cups.

I don't know why the problems sorry, to be honest I don't find it any differant as i rooted and flashed CM11 onto a mates S2 last weekend and the process was the same.

It sounds! like you aren't getting root access download simplerootchecker and check, if not re-read instructions on CF auto root.

First, using Odin, flash CF Auto Root for Root access.

Then flash Philz or CM via Odin for a custom recovery.

Then flash a ROM via Odin for fun times.
