Is anyone else having an issue where a new message notification comes up with flashing light [as selected in settings] but if you ignore it the flashing light goes out and new message icon disappears from the notification area as though you have no new mail?

The other thing I notice is that the message that triggered the alert any subsequent emails received are marked as read when I go to my inbox.  This happens mostly at night, I will wake up and look at the inbox and see emails that I should have been alerted to the previous evening and any number of other emails, sitting there unread but marked as read.

I had thought that something was killing the service that shows the notification but that doesn't explain why messages are being marked as read.

I have removed any other app that checks mail in case it is an IMAP issue where messages are being checked and marked as read by another email program.  Annoying problem to say the least.

This has only started happening with the latest Gmail update.

Weird. Certainly sounds like something else is logging in and reading your messages from somewhere. If its not you, maybe try changing your password?

Funny you should bring this up. I have recently noticed similar things. Emails I expected to see in the Inbox were in the All Mail folder. I haven't really fully analysed what is going on but had flagged it as something to keep an eye on. Your post has backed up my impression.

n4 so far so good. Thinking it has something to do with a Windows 8 laptop I set up recently, but this happens even if that is off. Will see if any "can't log in" errors pop up on that or my net book.

Looked at permissions in Google and revoked a few. Nothing that looked odd, just unneeded.
Thanks again

One thing you can look out for is emails that appear to come from yourself (so same email address) will usually just end up in All Mail folder and skip your inbox.

So if you are sending yourself reminders with the same From address that you have in Gmail, that will happen to you.

Thanks, jarledb, but don't think it was that. As I said, I am not sure anything problematic is happening but n4's post made me think of a 'what happened there' moment.

I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe, 'Nothing to see here, move on'!!!

Changing my password seems to have sorted out the issue, whatever was checking the email is no longer doing it.

I strongly suggest enabling 2 factor authentication.
Its available for Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox and more wesbites.

If someone gets ahold of your password, they aren't going to be able to get into your account. Plus a lot of these sites alert you to such suspicious activity.
