Yabanize:
Damager: Downloading my update now.

Been hard on custom roms since the original S but decided I'll stay as long as I can on stock. Took their time on this update though. I mostly miss the modified kernels with improved audio options, but otherwise I'm still going fairly fine with stock. I'm rooted so interested if I lose root after this update.

The s4 has some good audio options. When i tried to update while i was rooted it wouldnt let me, i flashed to stock

Hmm it fully downloaded but while prepping to restart it failed so downloading again. If it fails again I'll flash the update with Odin. I'm assuming even though it's flashed with Odin, as it's just an update, it'll be a non wipe flash? The modified kernels normally have extra options like gain controls and a few equaliser/gain/bluetooth audio improvement options.

So if I put the I9505XXUBMG4_I9505TNZBMG2_I9505XXUBMG4 firmware on all that happens is that's updated, all my apps, home screens, etc are still fine? Then I re-root using that auto thingy?

To be honest I would just backup your stuff, Do a factory reset (not sure how necessary this is) and wipe cache and then flash it

I think its the whole firmware, not just an addon update

I've only had Android for a week, I have no idea how to do a backup that backs up all my settings, home screens, etc. I'll probably just apply the huge new firmware and hope for the best, then re-root.

Maybe you would just want to leave it as it is for now:)

I want the new update! May get titanium backup pro and run that before I do anything.

I'll just use Odin to flash that huge new firmware file.

Update has nearly finished via Kies.. horribly slow process but now done and all okay!

Edit: Lost root but not entirely surprising.

Everything left as is, texts, apps and data. All as before the update.

Why'd you use kies instead of Odin? Noob here.

Well if the Odin file is 1.6gb then it's like going to be full firmware unlike the OTA update which is just 360 megs, hence will likely wipe the phone, and I wasnt in the mood for a full restoration. I'd backed everything up anyway and if Kies failed then Odin it was.

While I don't have an S4, I have had plenty of Samsung devices and flashing firmware via Odin has never wiped any of my devices before. They generally don't touch /data.

I updated my Tab 2 from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 the other day and it kept all my data.

How do you update a rooted device via kies then?

you would need to take it back to stock so hardly worth it.

As for backup or 'nandroid' backup, its done from custom recovery if you are rooted so go choose one I use Philz Touch which you flash using Odin. Then to get to recovery just use the volume up, home and power button pressed altogether to get to recovery and you have the backup options there..

Basically it backups everything so if you flash a rom and don't like it you just go to recovery and restore back to exactly where you were without any changes.

I normally backup to ext SD card otherwise it doesn't take long to fill up internal. If you are wanting to be really safe you can copy backup file to PC.

I didn't really understand much of that Jeff. I backed up to external SD card using titanium pro, copied that to my PC.

You're saying I flash Philz Touch using Odin, that lets me back up my existing ROM/firmware to external SD card so if a flash goes bad I can recover? I assume Philz Touch replaces Android System Recovery? Are there any downside?
