tigercorp: I installed Plants v Zombies 2 last night and noticed quite quickly the back of the phone getting getting hot, between the Samsung logo and camera.

Anyone having the same thing?

Thats where the motherboard/cpu is

Yep, that area usually gets warm/hot when intensive processes are running. PVZ2 probably shouldn't be that intensive, so it smacks of the developer not optimising it well enough. Playing Tekken Dark Resurrection via PPSSPP for any length of time turns the phone into a rather nice pocket warmer :)

(incidentally the latest build of PPSSPP, available direct from the dev and not yet on the Play Store has a really nice update for performance in some games - T:DR runs at basically 100% with frameskip set to 2 - just wonderful with the Moga Pro or even the Impulse controller for that matter)

richms: I called Samsung about mine and apparently I have a Vodafone note 3 from vnz in the csc and I need to try a Vodafone sim to see if I get 4g.

FFS wasn't told I was buying a locked to Vodafone when I bought it.

Hey rich,

Vodafone doesn't lock Galaxy Notes - The reason this will likely be happening is that Samsung devices enable/disable certain features at boot based on the SIM card that's inserted. Until now, Telecom has not been a 4G network operator, so 4G has been disabled when Telecom SIM cards have been inserted. A future software update from Samsung will likely update the operator feature list & enable 4G for the Telecom profile.

Unsure exactly when that will be, I'll keep an eye out & let folks know when we've got the info.

Thanks for the information, i have the same issue here. Bought a VNZ note 3, with a Telecom 4G sim card, but still on H+ connection.

i totally agree with the confusion about the "3 variants"
i unknowingly bought two 2degrees Note 3's from PBTech to find out that the LTE doesn't work using Telecom sims.... what a slap in the face.

To make matters worse, i contacted samsung, telecom, PBTech and 2degrees to get 5 different "stories" about the fix.
The replies in short are:

Samsung::: your stuck on 2degrees, use your note on 2degrees, it will never ever work on vodafone or telecom. even with an update, it wont help. bye.

Telecom store::: there will be an update for non-telecom bought phones... when? who knows....

Telecom website by email::: its in the firmware, ask 2degrees if LTE is enabled. bye.

2degrees::: go ask telecom, you are using their sim card.

PBTech::: give me 2 days, ill look it up on the internet and find a un-official rom to stick in it.

i did find an app, that enabled 4G/LTE on my 2degrees note 3 using telecom sim.
its called Viaero 4G toggle, the 4G icon shows when in 4G zone.
i haven't had a chance to speed test it yet as it uses about 120mb per test.
hopefully its only a temporary solution until something official fixes it.

kinda sucks how I've used iPhones for 6 years and the first android I've owned has given me so much headache. (btw, my iPhone 5, works perfect on telecom LTE, no hassle)

has anyone else contacted Samsung, telecom, 2 degrees etc ????
what did they reply?

I've ordered a 2 degrees note 3 as well, because of a special at Dick Smith, but I use a Telecom SIM. I'll give that app a go when I get it (early next month - so hopefully someone will beat me to that) also, but as far as I understand from looking online, that should be just as good as the Telecom Note 3 for 4G. 2 Degrees just disabled 4G in their software as they don't have a 4G network yet, and this app re-enables it.

Getting someone to confirm that, as you said, would be great though!

Just downloaded that app - didn't seem to work for me (2degrees note 3, Telecom 4G sim, central Wellington). If I set it to anything other than LTE only, it won't make a 4G connection, only H+. Set to LTE only, it claims to, but doesn't actually deliver any data over 4G. Any tips?

No, the 2degrees ROM is missing the top one. The app mentioned above provides a large list of options though, one of which (LTE only) appears to enable 4G on the rom.

Also, it did manage to successfully make a 4G connection and transfer data when I last tried it. I've switched it back to WCDMA preferred for now though until someone more knowledgeable than me can advise how to do it properly!

so the answer is that, 2degrees needs to push out a firmware update that tells the CSC to enable the 4G radio onboard. until that happens, the phone is doing as instructed and keeping the 4G radio disabled. either you flash a new CSC to enable it manually (and run all the risks of flashing therein) or wait indefinitely for 2degrees to switch to 4G, and have an update sent out to their customers changing the official 2degrees CSC.

experts please correct me if im wrong in this summary? if this is accurate then technically "telecom store", "telecom email" and "PB Tech" gave the most accurate (if disjointed) information... :)

The CSC has profiles per operator. So for NZ, 2degrees has a profile, Vodafone has a profile, and Telecom has a profile, all contained on the same phone. In this case, the profile is enabling or disabling 4G depending on whether the operator had told Samsung to enable it for them at the time that particular revision of the CSC shipped. LTE is not disabled system-wide, only per-operator. If you put a Vodafone SIM in the device, the LTE option will appear.

The next software updates will presumably include more recent revisions of the NZ CSCs in which 4G is enabled for Telecom's operator profile.

installed the app and choose the LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) option from the network list, it did show the 4G sign and can transfer data over the connection. My phone is a Vodafone version note 3.

will keep the app run until got the firmware updated. thanks flyryd to share the app.

heres another app showing the connection.
it also shows my 4G icon, weak signal because i'm in an apartment.

i just did a speed test also, and its getting 60Mbps on the weak signal, which confirms it works.

That app worked for me but I have only ever seen 1 bar of signal. Did a speedtest and got 50 down and now I'm out of data.

the "OOKLA" speedtest app for 4G seems to use 125mb sized packets to test, for every speedtest run, btw... ;p

i think 3G speedtest packets were only 25mb?

Pretty sure the LTE option only appeared on my Telecom Note 3 after the firmware update last week.

Turning it on with the 3G SIM installed seems to cause massive battery drain though. I'd done so pre-emptively, have now reverted to "WCDMA Only".

You can download Telecom/Vodafone firmwares from samfirmware.com and use Odin to flash the appropriate firmware onto the device. If you're lucky then it may not void warranty.
