They could quite well be restricted in all parts of the world. I've just watched an unboxing video on PhoneDog where there was a sticker on the box saying the phone could only be used with a SIM card issued in the Americas.

Yeah, it's certainly not just the EU - the US has the equivalent US-only sticker on it's shipments. Wonder if we'll get them here.

just placed a pre-order for the Samsung Note 3, Black, 32GB on the telecom nz site - $1,199 off plan!

When you go to the pre-order screen it comes up with recommended 0n-contract plans.  Scroll down a little and there is a button "other plans"  click on this and you get two tabs, second is for off-contract (no fixed term) plans. The phone price is $1199 for all of these options.

I got the cheapest at $39 mth, 1 GB data, 300 minutes, unlimited txts.

best off all, I rang Samsung NZ earlier to try and find out when the Note 3 would be available in NZ.  Got a "we know nothing, see nothing...." stonewall response.  Then I rang telecom, same response but also, "you will only be able to purchase on-contract from us at the beginning"

But here was what was printed on my order confirmation:

S"amsung Galaxy Note 3 - Pre-order Your Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be delivered 3-5 days from the 10 October 2013. "

If you pre-ordered earlier you might have got an earlier delivery date - not sure. But hey, Oct 15 and no contract beats what I have been hearing so far, so I am in....  grinning already!

why pay more ($1265? $1300?) to parallel import and risk incompatible SIM etc? Telecom even offers a full cover insurance option for under $14 a month - loss, breakage, illicit phone use etc.

disclosure: I have no relationship with telecom other than as a customer.

cheers

Only VF knows for sure. They may well have it at the same time as Telecom for all we know, they haven't announced anything on their site. Given that Telecom supposedly have exclusivity for the Gear for the 1st month of release, it may well be that they have the same agreement for the Note 3.

They're certainly not going to risk losing customers to Telecom because they don't have the device that people want if they can avoid it. Also, it's an LTE device so they'd probably like more people using that. Can always buy it with a no-term contract and then change straight over to VF.

If this SIM locking is widespread I will probably pass on the Note 3, as sad as that will make me. I will not support this with my hard earned.

Looks like Samsung might have just shot themselves in the foot... :-/
I had thought about selling the s4 for the note3, but now I'll look at the nexus 5. Samsung won't be getting any more money from me either.

its a big leap to assume that SIM locking for the Europe market for via one reseller, Clove, means SIM locking in all markets, and to make purchase decisions on that basis.  More data required I suspect....

I applaud Samsung for doing the right thing here. A great move to stop parallel importing!
