Yeah I'm just curious about the app side of things.

Will just have to wait until someone I know gets a gear 2 / neo, then compare the two.

ok second day with Gear and its actually better than I thought. Saves a lot of time with the notifications and you have a long list you can set up. The heart rate monitor isn't exactly what I thought and doesn't constantly monitor and then you have to remain still for about 10 seconds

S Voice works a treat albeit slightly slower than the phone but again saves you from having to pull phone out.

XDA have a Gear 2 thread already and I see Samsung have released a developers pack so we may see some Dev magic emerge sooner rather than later.

Galaxy Gear  here
Gear Fit here
Gear Neo   here

not a lot of discussion as of yet but very new product but I'm sure taht will change.

I got the Gear 2 Neo and so far I am pretty happy with it. Nice screen, very usable as a hands free device, speaker is loud enough to hear whilst driving.

Haven't tested the running app yet so it will be interesting to see how the heart rate sensor works as jeffnz pointed out above the actual heart rate function if you push the icon just gives you your current heart rate and then stops itself. If you select excercise and look at the options the heart rate function is greyed out but is ticked, I am hoping this will provide constant monitoring.

Great feature to have it work as a stand alone music player too as I have a set of Bluetooth headphones that work very nicely with it.

I think for gen III I would suggest samsung increase the screen size about 15% ( I have big wrists) , incorporate a gps chip for navigation/fitness apps and make more apps compatible, the Nike+ running app for one would be great.

yes I agree, what I'm ultimately looking for is something that will be a substitute for my cycle computer and Map my ride on  the phone so ANT+ would be great so I get heartrate, speed, cadence and GPS tracking.

I think the new gear is on the right track and best of what is on market at moment.

Looking forward to Apple releasing  a wearable as they will make the others push harder, all in all I'm very happy with what it can do.

I don't think they need to have GPS. Since it's only an accessory for your phone, you will still have your phone on you. As long as you can control your phone from the watch, then that's all you need.

It does however, need to have better GPS functions. With my Fit, I've had times where it hasn't detected movement while cycling, and has stopped the exercise. So an option to never turn off GPS / motion tracking would be good.

Also, it would be good to have access to your contacts list on your phone. Not to add/edit/delete, but viewing would be good. Quite often I've been on my phone, then have to look into my phone to find someone else's number/address etc. That seems like something the watch should be able to display.

Also, thanks for those above links. I see that Endomondo will be making their apps work with S Health.. so I'm looking forward to that! Hopefully that will bring better GPS tracking.

Without GPS though for accurate tracking I would have to run with my S5, not the smallest of phones!

ahh good info thankyou as I use Endomondo so i'll check that out it may well be the answer to a lot of it.

With contacts on the Gear 2 it has access but seems to only be phone numbers as you can initiate the call from there, sorry not sure if that is what you meant.

I agree with the GPS especially if in areas that lose signal as when out mountain biking in forest, although it tends to guess you line of travel its still better than switching it off.

I've noticed today that the email notification on the Gear 2 is kind of "dumb": you can delete an email but it deletes on the device only, not synchronising back to the smartphone.

Also, there is a blocking mode. Go to Sleep app and you have an option to turn it on and off - no schedule.

Looks like more than just Sammie phones are able to use the Gear. From the looks of it only those app's that require Samsung services don't fully work, would think that won't be long before they do.

Phones confirmed working:

This following list is for Gear Fit compatibility, but it SHOULD be the same for Gear 2 / Gear 2 Neo:

  • All variants of the M8
  • All variants of the M7
  • Nexus 4
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 7
  • Xperia Z Ultra
  • Xperia SP
  • Moto X
What works:

  • Notifications
  • Clocks
  • Find my Device
  • Heart Rate
  • Reject Calls
  • Media Controls
  • Watchface customizer
  • Pretty much everything
What doesn’t work:

  • No Weather
  • No music controller (not player)
  • No WatchOn
  • No SVoice
  • No Schedule
  • Pretty much anything that uses a Samsung Account or Samsung Services

Ok, a bit unhappy now... Email notifications are deleted on Gear only and not on the smartphone, but read status is synchronised back to the device. Why one and not the other?

I see there are a few new clock faces app[earing and more every day in  the samsung store. Also available is the Watch Styler app where you design your own or you can download a face from Gearfaces site and load onto your watch.

Some quite interesting faces, wouldn't mind a Tag one but most likely copyright issues.
