I am seriously considering the 8.9" Amazon Tablet even with the understanding it's movies won't likely be available to me, potentially ever.

I do have a couple of questions:

1) Is anyone aware of a non Amazon device with similar specs? Screen size and weight are important.
2) Previous Amazon Tablets have been Rootable so you could install Google Play, something I would consider very important?

Its pretty Amazon media centric. But you could VPN into the US. Maybe wait for a newer updated Nexus 10. Or a Surface 2 :P

I'd love a Surface 2, pity it would be 3 times the price! Perhaps MS could set-up a program so that their long standing loyal, and hard working resellers could get one at a heavily discounted rate with an Action Pack Subscription!

Asus' TF701T would be worth a look. Though it is marginally bigger (10.1" vs 8.9", 580g vs 380g), it's otherwise very similar spec, and adds the option to have the keyboard dock with USB3 and extended battery. Nexus 10 is also worth a look.

Someone over at XDA Developer will no doubt come up with a way to get Play etc on there once they're out, but the previous round took a few months.

Yah the extra 200 grams is a lot honestly. The Nexus 10 is last gen as well, they can't be far away from an upgrade, but it's pretty chunky.

Weight and screen resolution are both very important to me.
