At the NZ prices Playtech/Warehouse is selling for you might as well go for a parallel imported Xperia Z1 which has far superior specs. The N5 is only worth the money at the steep discount price from the Google Play store, it is definitely not worth it at prices that approach flagship models.

The Z1 is bigger and heavier.
The Z1 doesn't run pure android (I have the Xperia Z tablet and as good as the Sony UI is, it is not as clean as pure Kit Kat).
The Z1 is not running Kit Kat (and who knows when Sony will provide it - and keep it up to date over time?).
The Z1 does not have Gorilla Glass 3 (my 'scratch-proof' Xperia Z tablet has a lovely 1 inch scratch already and it hasn't had a hard life).

Ok, the Z1 has a better camera, is waterproof etc, bigger battery, but by no means is it a no-brainer choice over the Nexus. I turned down a Z1 for $699 a couple of weeks ago and have gone with the Nexus. Couldn't be happier.

Alrighty so I just picked up my Nexus 5. This thing is bloody fantastic. After weeks deliberating where I wanted to head with my phone purchase, the Nexus 5 won my vote and I am very pleased.

Picked it up from the Albany mall 2degrees store this morning. Really looking forward to figuring out what accessories I want to buy too. Any recommendations? I'm thinking a case and a wireless charger for starters.

sson013: Google shipped a D.O.A N5 to my friend in Aus. Friend sent it to me as a gift and it costs $100 AUD to ship a lithium battery item through international courier cause of the IATA regulations. Google refuses to ship RMA to NZ for any reason and LG won't honor the warranty either. So if you did a private import of Nexus 5 you better hope you have no issues with it because you are completely screwed if you do.

You should not have piad for shipping a lithium battery.

Lithium Ion Batteries - 2013 Regulations from DHL,

Battery contained in equipment -> less than 2 batteries -> no requirements.
http://www.dhl.com.au/content/dam/downloads/g0/express/shipping/lithium_batteries/lithium_ion_batteries_regulations.pdf

The problem is you must fill in a hazmat form and this costs money. We tried Aus Post and several other international couriers, all of them cost in excess of $100 to get all the proper paperwork and "special packaging" which was just some black tape -.-

Worst phone purchase ever and while technically we probably shouldn't have imported a phone from AU it still leaves me with a pretty bitter experience of Google as a company when they refuse to budge on RMA addresses.

2 Options from Google will both result in me/friend losing 200-300$

1. Ship it back to Aus, Google will pick it up and RMA back to Aus address. Ship it back to NZ. (this would lead to shipping costs of 300$AUD going back and forth)
2. Ship it back to Aus and get a full refund (which they did not even offer until I pointed out that under Australian law it was the buyers choice whether to refund/replace if there is a major fault). I would still basically lose all $200 in shipping.

I am hoping my friend's attempt to file a credit card charge reversal succeeds on the basis that Google refuses to be reasonable in dealing with a D.O.A mobile. Bank is understanding of the reasoning but no guarantees.

I am so sorry to hear your trouble. I am actually waiting for the phone to be brought over by my sister. I ordered 2x 32GB Nexus 5 to my auntie's address - and she has received them. I have asked her to check to make sure they turn on and off. That's the only thing I know about the condition of the phone. I know they have a reasonably high 'fault' rate - and really hope they are good when they arrive here next week. I don't see why it would cost a lot of money to send the phone from and to Australia / NZ.

Only reason why I would order from Australia is to get 32GB that is 4G capable. I still think 16GB is too small for my needs.

I am trying to get the GST return - but not sure if it will work well. They are quite picky and TRS might just refuse it. I will report if my sister can get the GST back next week.

I bought a spigen ultra hybrid and a neo hybrid case from spigen on ebay.  ~$53 landed for the both (ordered late on the 24th turned up today).

The Neo hybrid has a similar texture to a black lumia 920, its a high quality polycarbonate sort of feel even tho its a softer plastic.  Not grippy like nekkid.  not sure if i like it yet.  The button action is really nice though and with the exception of the cutout around the usb it looks like a nekkid phone (obviously a bit fatter than standard but if you gave it someone that had never seen a n5 they probably wouldn't realise).  Fingerprints aren't as bad as nekkid.

The ultra hybrid has a grippier texture on the back but still not as grippy as the nekkid feel.  i got the clear one and there is the option of putting a cutout picture of some gears or a cityscapish pic between the back and the phone which tarts it up a bit (or just looks wrong depending on your point of view).  The buttons don't feel as good as the neo and you might find the occasional misfire as they exert pressure at all times.  However fingerprint magnet from hell, worse than nekkid.

I will reserve judgement on which one will be the keeper until my wireless chargers turn up

Why shouldn't the N5 have a flagship price when it's a flagship phone?!

For my money, even at $700 for a non-parallel imported recent release flagship phone - the price is hard to argue with. Certainly it's higher than those in countries with a Play store have to pay, but that's always going to be the case until Google realise that we in NZ are keen early adopters and then decide that they care enough to help us.  Look at what the normal retailers (i.e not Google) in the US are charging for the N5 and our deal here looks pretty sharp.

I'm loving my phone - and it's smoking fast. And I'm not even using ART. Boot time <30 s is awesome compared to my old GNex.

Ditch the case idea - go naked! Why spoil the experience?

I've ordered me a genuine Nexus Wireless Charger from Amazon - same price as US Play store - magnetic location of phone/tablet - looking forward to that arriving.

I'm ultra paranoid about any camera that sits flush with the back of the phone.  a redesigned back with a hump for the camera would be awesome.

I ordered the owl car pad and deskpad qi chargers, i will pick them up on monday, the nexus charger does look good tho.

google are still slacking with a car charger dock which i find annoying after the gnex (when the dock eventually came out a year after launch of the phone) and the last 2 motorolas which all had excellent genuine car docks.

LG also stopped making their excellent "smart fit2" car dock which had a fitting to take their in house qi charger, there are a few left on ebay but dumb money $300 for something verizon was selling for 25 at one stage.

Anyone able to transfer files over BT using WIndows 8/8.1? I can pair to the Nexus 5 (and 10) but when I try to transfer a file a window opens very briefly, cant see what it says, then goes. No file transfer. When I go back to Bluetooth devices it shows the N5 as not connected although it was connected prior to trying to transfer. Oh well, thank goodness for Airdroid.

Also guys, just to make sure you know --> With LG devices (which include our N5s) you can sign up for a Box account, and then you sign into the app on your phone. This will give you a free 50 gb cloud storage for life with your Box account.

mckenndk: Got an email today saying my order from Google Australia to an Aussie address has been canceled as some details could not be verified they had my Auntys phone number so they could of called her if they had any issues with it. Looks like I will be going with the GS4 then.

In the exact boat

Really pissed off when I saw the email as I ordered on the 5th. Rang google immediately to see what the story was and if I could get my order re-instated.

Was a no go but the guy told me that I could get it if I used a Aus credit card. Bit the bullet and went for 2 white 32gb models due to ship 6th December (which was the original ship date of my first order). Will keep yous posted on the situation

Edit

I've even got my spigen cases ready too, both are sick. God forbid these phones never come :(

is anyone's gmail app acting up lately ??

I've got some new emails which can be seen from the web gmail.

But when i swipe down to refresh on the app..it does that blue moving line thing...and then nothing....doesn't get new emails.

The remedy is to go to apps in settings, and delete the gmail data, cache and force stop...then start it again, and sync from the beginning..

Really annoying.

Co-incidentally...the web gmail is also acting up. I"m trying to send something and it won't send anything. Even from desktop.
