Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting hold of an Kyocera Torque (basically a 'rugged' Android phone), but they don't seem to be available here.

Do these work on the NZ network? If not, do you have any suggestions for a 'rugged' Android that I can get locally?

Thanks.

It won't work on Telecom or get LTE (4G) from what I believe as its 1900band 2 but others will know better than I.

there is the Samsung S4 active prices here or the Sony Z1  but both would need something like Otter box to make them idiot proof.

There is more than one "NZ network". If you are talking 3G then you need a phone that used either or both depending on network:

  • 900/2100 MHz WCDMA: Vodafone/2degrees
  • 850 MHz WCDMA: Telecom/Skinny

Note that's 900 MHZ WCDMA (3G), not 900 MHz GSM (2G).

Yes, I know about Telecom 2100 MHz. Not listed because it's a waste of time getting a phone without 850 MHz support to use on Telecom.

The Kyocera Torque is a Sprint CDMA device. It will 100% not work on any NZ network, doesn't support GSM or UMTS at all, and the LTE band it does support is no use here. The Galaxy Xcover 2 might be a suitable local equivalent. :)

I see - thank you for that info!
