I can't see anything in the settings that would allow you to do this.

Try using CloudMagic, I used that for a while and it worked quite well.

Let's step back for a minute and check that you're solving the right problem here. You're obviously getting into reading view for these emails that you don't want to read yet. How areYou getting into the reading view?
* Are you tapping into an email and deciding you don't want to deal with it yet?
* Have you been looking at another email, deleted it, and been taken to the mail you don't to yet?
* Are you using a tablet that has a persistent reading pane on the right, and no matter what it's going to mark the first email as read?

Each of these are different problems that give the same unwanted result.

For problem #1, you need an email client that won't mark a message as read unless you explicitly tell to so. There's really no other option.

For problem #2, you should be able configure the Android email client to take you back to the message list after you delete a message. You'll only end up reading the messages that you tap into.

For problem #3, there could be a few solutions but don't think any are supported by the standard email client. You could turn off the reading pane (i.e. use the phone view), set the client to only mark messages as read after X seconds, or only allow manual changing of message status.

Please bear in mind that I'm looking at this from a software developer's point of view. You quickly learn that the problem you're trying to solve isn't always the same the problem the user thinks they're seeing.

My only thought was "don't open email unless you want to read it", but that's probably a bit simple.

Opening it and seeing I can't answer now on the phone and will do it later. No preview on the note 3 to use to get around that.

Tried another mail client? Obviously a Samsung thing with stock email. Rich notifications not working?

Is the Note 3 on Kit Kat yet, or still Jellybean?

The standard Kit Kat email client is actually not too bad about displaying the start of the email text, assuming there's space. I get space for 2 lines of text on my phone - it displays the subject then whatever body text there's room for.

If you're still on JB, hopefully Samsung pull the preview feature into their email client. I wouldn't guarantee it though - Samsung have quite a habit of taking useful features and screwing with them.

It's jellybean.

Preview usually isn't enough to see unfortunately.

It's a basic feature of outlook and thunderbird so disappointing that it cannot have this behavior disabled.

I've just tried something on the Kit Kat client, and it might suit your needs. If you're viewing a message and you hit the Mark As Unread icon on the toolbar at the top of the screen, you're taken back to the message list with the email now unread.

It's not quite as convenient as hitting the Back hardware button, but it's not too far off.

I think I have broken it, or locked myself out or someones changed my password because they didnt know it and needed to log in while i am off this week. Will sort it out next week anyway. Probably didnt need to be checking my email when not working in anycase.
