NikT: When the Galaxy S II launched, it was $1199. $1049 for the S5 seems right in line with expectations to me. :)

A bit of a rip off here considering the AT&T's full retail price is $US649  which is NZ 766 + GST  = $880

That's for SIM locked, network-specific hardware, purchased at a much larger scale than the NZ market, so not quite apples and apples IMO.

BuffyNZ:

Wonder which one I should get. I am really torn between the:

Samsung GALAXY S5 -Black With Micro SD card (32GB)

and the

Samsung GALAXY S5 - black With Micro SD Card (32GB)

Or the

Samsung GALAXY S5 - Black With Micro SD Card (32GB)

Or maybe the

Samsung GALAXY S5 - White With Micro SD Crad (32GB)

Or maybe I did really mean the aa aa aa aa?

If you look at the product codes, they're for different network :)

Yes, I did notice that.

I made sure to choose my network provider, but at no other stage in the process did it say I was ordering a VF phone, as opposed to a 2D phone.

Very subtle, prone to confusion and error, not well designed, and full of typos and spelling mistakes.

It does not give me confidence that I will receive what I actually wanted.

I may post this in the wrong forum previously. If anyone seen more pre-order from other retailers can add to the list.

Below are what I've seen on offer for S5 pre-order:
Noel Leeming $1049 with free 32GB card
Telecom Stores $1049 with Spotify preloaded
Warehouse Stationery $1049 with bonus Samsung Activity Tracker worth $139.90

Comapred to how much these phones drop in price after a few months, yes it is very expensive, but you pay extra to be seen with it first (if you care about that). If you compare it to iphones though, they hold their value much better, partly due to iphones not really getting discounted.

Sorry for the late answer.  Have asked my contacts in the US and they say that if you pay full price and on an open monthly plan the fone is not lock. The only time it is locked is when you're on a subsidized plan.  So my statement that we are being ripped off still stands.  By the way the HTC M8 ulocked direct from HTC is $US630

ok lets compare a simlar phone here in NZ as thats more relevant than comparing it to another country. Compared to other offerings and certainly the S4 on release its cheaper. The other option is not to buy it instead of trashing it.

When the s2 came out 3 years ago it was $1200. Lets take inflation into consideration. Ill put a conservative 3% per year. That's 9% over 3 years, which means in todays money its worth about $1308. With this new phone costing $1049, its actually 20% cheaper than the s2. I think that's reasonable.

On another note: people expect electronics prices to go down but R&D and raw costs increase every year. It can't be sustainable.

Why is it that people in this group seem to have no problem saying to retailers "Hey I live here in NZ. Rip me off"  and we all take it.

/me sighs. Read any other thread where someone has made similarly silly comments and read the patient explanations from people who have thought it all through and understand the exact reasons that prices are higher.

Well you are certainly entitled to your misguided opinion.

Anyone knows if NZ stock comes with wireless charging? Samsung says it's market dependent and seems retailers can't give me the answer.

Not that misguided when you have the NZ boss of Countdown admitting in an interview in the weekend herald that large international suppliers are charging more to supply product to kiwis just because they can. Different area of retail but same outcome.

He also states that global shipping isn't an issue with the quantities involved.

I don't want to drag this off topic but I think you need to look at the facts carefully.

Anyway back on topic, I think the 2degrees offer with the Gear 2 Neo bundle is a reasonable deal compared to the other telcos but I already have an S4 mini so not sure it's worth locking in to a 2 year contract.
