Have only played with the G in stores, so can't say. No complaints about performance, however, especially on the ART runtime. Haven't spent much time with Mediatek chips before, find myself pleasantly surprised thus far.

jarj: Is the display IPS?

Yep, certainly seems to be. No complaints about colour representation or viewing angles, the whites are nice and crisp.

ETA: Lokhor asked me to benchmark it, it tests quite similarly to the Galaxy S III. Benchmarking plowed through ~20% of the battery, so it finally died on me at 3PM - just after hitting 5hrs screen on time.

Not too shabby, Smart 4 Power, not too shabby. Bring on the second battery cycle.

What's the resolution? qHD? What's that in pixels?

qHD = 960 x 540.

I've previously used a number of qHD devices with 4.3" screens (Motorola RAZR & Photon) & found it just fine at that screen size. While it's less dense over 5", it's a positive in the battery life department this particular device is focusing on.

There's definitely a market gap for a phone with truly tank battery life, IMO - wish Moto's RAZR MAXX series had made it to local retail.

ETA: Have just had confirmation that there will be 2x NFC tags included in the box, so that's a nice little bonus!

Battery cycle #2: Have just hit 40% after 31hrs off the charger, just shy of 3hrs screen on time.

Quite impressed with this one.

Hey folks,

Gave the Smart 4 power a write-up here for the curious. If you want battery life, this is the local go-to, and it's now free on the $39 plan.

If anyone in Auckland fancies a look at one of my units, let me know. :)

How does the phone handle intensive gaming? Say gta/real racing or modern combat? Or even fifa?

Thank you if you can help.

You'll definitely need a decent micro SD card if you intend to game on it, as it only has 2GB of internal storage. I don't have an SD spare to test at work right now (I normally would, but my Note 3 is in a metal bumper case that's screwed in place, can't get my trusty 64GB card out!), so can't give GTA a crack as it's ~1.22GB, but Dead Trigger 2 will fit just fine. Will let you know how that runs.

EDIT: Running just fine, even on high settings.

The Smart 4 power benchmarked similarly to the Galaxy S III, so I'd wager you'll be alright when it comes to gaming, as a lot of folks use S IIIs.

Sounds perfect. It's a surprisingly cool phone, think you'll dig it. Audio isn't too bad either, and camera's serviceable in the right lighting. Battery + 4G + HD voice are the real killer features, although the NFC tags in the box are nifty as well.

Speaking of audio, I know not to expect lumia/sony or htc quality sound but is there an equalizer? I mostly listen to music through Bluetooth alot and that was a major problem with my Lumia 520.

It's running a largely untouched version of Android 4.4.2, so includes Google's MusicFX EQ. You can access it from the Google Play Music app and some third-party music apps like Poweramp.
