so... my phone arrived today (smaller than I expected, kinda disappointed, TBH, given how much I paid for it -- apparently I should also expect it to be pretty slow and sh!t compared to even >$200 phones. hmph. did I fnck up?)

and it seems like I can't charge this thing, either.
it came with two cords, neither of which seem to have any sort of compatibility with the phone, I have no idea what they're for (look pretty much like a microUSB and a skinnier microUSB...

apparently the phone only has a "charging dock connector" ... and nothing to dock it with? wtf

should I send this fnckin' thing back? I was hoping for a significant improvement for how much more I paid for this over my last phone. even the camera seems pretty sh!t.

Interestingly my Z3 Compact that I have had for a couple of weeks now, the flap which covers the sd/sim card closes, but then comes back out on it's own accord, not fully out, but certainly out more than it should be...thinking this will do nothing for its water tightness :\

Others have this issue (I don't)

Here is someone that fixed it

It's a shame you aren't liking yours, I think it is an underrated device, but I'm curious, what $200 phone do you expect will out perform this? Also it is called Compact in direct reference to its size, that is one of its main selling points, flagship specs in a compact form factor, I think many more people would be disappointed if it was a large device. :)

I'll have to get back to you on that. I never remember what phones people tell me they have.

I only bought it over the bigger one because it was $150 cheaper. but it looks like I can get bigger phones for half _this_ price.
if I had known the camera was garbage, I'd never have gone near it.
have any of you managed to get good photos (night and day, inside and out) on this thing?

I've got awesome photos from this, maybe your one is defective?
I hold down the camera button to focus and full press to take a photo. I also use the other features of the camera like the blur and manual mode for higher res.

Heres a few of my mobile shots from this.

I have many more to upload but the Internet in Central America is trash.

Wow you really sound as though you are struggling to enjoy this. I love mine. Does everything I want to (and more), great photos, superb video, and even for novelty factor it actually works well as a phone too ;)

Most will also check the phone for size before they buy as well, if you wish to spend that much money sight unseen then perhaps some more research next time?

I saw the M4 Aqua or sumn in store and liked it, and somewhere along the way I got switched over to preferring the Z3 without noticing it was in quite a different class.

but the size doesn't bother me that much...it's a fraction bigger than my $400 cheaper phone.

I really want to get used to this thing, because obviously I'd sell it at a massive loss on TradeMe, but it just seems so rubbish -- even the torch(camera flash light) feature is weak compared to my AceII. if I had a third phone I'd film a comparison, it's ridiculous.

lapimate:
thekiwi: ... must get a magnetic one for that! :)
But there have been reports that magnetic connectors may pull the port apart. Has anyone on Geekzone had this problem?

Yes! I purchased a couple of Magnector X2's which worked great for a month or so until the day they pulled the charging port out of my Z3C. Sony ended up repairing the phone under warranty but I was without it for over 2 weeks while it was repaired.
Looking back it was the middle of summer when this happened and I had been using the phone in the car a lot for GPS, the heat may have contributed to the failure but either way I'm no longer using the Magnector's - they are far to strong. I still use a generic magnetic charging dock but that's about it.
