This is going to sound like a strange request but I use a couple of apps that allows you to take photos and then they use the photos in different ways.  What I'd like to do is instead of taking an actual photo I'd like to select an image that I've already got loaded on my phone and return that image to the app rather than a new photo.

Are there any apps that replace the camera app with something like this?  Maybe pops up a question that asks "do you want to take a real photo or load an image instead?" and does the appropriate action?

As far as I can tell these apps just open the default camera app which then takes a photo and returns the photo's filename to the calling app which can use the photo as necessary.

Can you not open the image in your gallery app and share it to the one you want?

You need something like QuickPic and the send to function.

K1000716: Can you not open the image in your gallery app and share it to the one you want?

The apps that I want to import the image into aren't set up to receive images that way.  They just have a "Take photo" button which opens the camera (looks like the stock camera app) and when a photo is taken they process the image.

nathan: can you remap the camera button to open the app that you want instead of the camera app?

You mean somehow change the photo button in the app so it opens a different app instead of the camera app?  I don't think you can change how a button in an app works, only the developer of the app could do that.  However I think the app might just be calling the default camera app, so if I could change the default camera app to be a different app that allowed me to select an image from the filesystem instead of taking a photo then it might work.  But my searching for an app that does this hasn't turned up anything yet.  All I get are replacement camera apps and they all seem to take real photos rather than allow loading from the filesystem.

timmmay: You need something like QuickPic and the send to function.

The apps don't appear to be set up to receive a photo sent to them in any other way other than calling the camera app.  My understanding is that for Send To to work an app has to register itself with the system and tell it what sort of files it will accept, then when you use the Send To function in an app the system will list all the available apps that are registered for that filetype and you select the one you want to send to.  The apps I'm using don't appear to accept anything.

You wouldn't have the names of any of these apps would you? Maybe they've made an Android version that I can search for.

joker97: does android have instagram and photoshop?

Yes.  I assume that instagram can replace the default camera app, so that would allow it to be called by the apps I'm using.  Does instagram allow an image to be loaded and returned to the calling app rather than just opening the camera and taking a photo?  I can't see how photoshop would help, unless I want to edit the images which I don't.

I've found what I'm looking for.  There are two apps, both called Fake Camera, that do what I want.  I should have thought of using the word "fake" in my searches!
