Thanx Nik for the input. I mainly bought it for her because of the multifunction Home button. Took her a bit of getting used to but has mastered it now I think

jonathan18: Have any owners of a Redmi Note 2 or other Mi phones had problems with receiving calls on their phones?
In the past week my wife has received calls where the caller can hear her but she can't hear them. There appear to be some reports of this with other Mi phones but not necessarily any ideal solutions (one involves tapping it hard three times on its back!).
I've still not being able to install TWRP on the phone so stuck on the upgraded ROM initially supplied by Goldway. Would upgrading it possibly help?
Thanks
It's worth trying. I got the xiaomi.eu rom installed by goldway with the phone, and had no problem with calls. And I've since installed TWRP and upgraded and had no problem with calls. The only thing I noticed with the upgrade was perhaps 20% more battery usage.

That was the same ROM I had Goldway install with the phone when I purchase it; they then said I needed to change it to a different version (they claimed international, but the one it had come with had all the Google apps etc), which I did, but I've still had no luck with TWRP etc.
I've referred back to your success, difficult to achieve though it was (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=172051&page_no=16#1460209), and still hold out hope I'll get there! Can you give many specific tips as to how you successfully got TWRP working? I haven't tried for a month or so, but back then I wasted SO many hours trying I'd hope to approach it this time with more idea of how to do it successfully. Thanks!

Sorry, I don't use my portable computer for that feature. But when I did have to use it for that to call my mobile data provider because their onlune support was useless, it did work ok.

I would rather roll around in a patch of stinging nettle naked than try and look into this festering clumsy haphazard nonsense again Sorry!

Sorry!
Yeah, that's what I feared!
Well, I'll give it another go and see if I get any further... If I can't upgrade it and this phone call problem continues (or we face other problems like the inability to connect her phone to the Megabooms) we may have to look at moving the phone on; given my wife's looking at shifting back to 2Degrees for mobile for work purposes, she'll be able to get a Vodafone Smart Ultra - which is what I'd have got her in the first place - if it had been Spark-compatible.

Heaven forbid - using a phone for making and receiving calls; what will they think of next! Do you just avoid using phones to talk on, or do you carry additional devices for this purpose?

I just don't give anyone the number or call people. I find phones intrusive and annoying.
Not sure exactly how cheap this will be, but really looking at getting a Mi5 once they've started shipping and miuiandroid pick up support. Especially since:
Mi 5 comes with support for 18 LTE bands including 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 8 / 12 / 13 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 20 / 25 / 26 / 27 / 28 / 29
Not sure how official that is, but apparently from the xiaomi forums during a Q&A after the Mi5 launch.
That ceramic backed 128Gb pro version looks too tempting... Though might just end up with the glass backed 64Gb one.

Geekbuying are offering the 32GB version of the Mi5 for $US439 ($NZ645), no 700MHz band in the specs though.
This means that all NZ ISPs should work with this phone on the 4G network. Vodafone and Spark support band 3 and 7, and 2degrees supports band 3.
Also, just to note, Spark and Vodafone both have band 28 support (700Mhz) but this phone doesn't support it.
Here's a list of the cheapest ones I could find.
Original price in China: 32GB - $466NZD, 64GB - $525.50NZD, 128GB/4GB 616.56NZD
Geekbuying: 32GB - $410 ($612NZD), 64GB - $466 ($696NZD), 128GB/4GB - $540 ($806NZD)

Thanx for the info. Unfortunately you're going to get done for GST and all the other fees that NZ customs can hit you with unlike the Mi4i I bought last year that came to NZ$381 landed..

Assuming they dont ship it as a $40 gift like most things from there seem to come as.

Bump on this - have any users of a Redmi phone experienced the same problem with not being able to hear the voice of a caller?
Since my earlier post, I've managed to install TWRP and upgrade to the current MIUI release, but my wife's Note 2 still occasionally results in her not being able to hear the person on the other end of the line. Switching at the time to speaker phone or re-booting the phone provides an immediate fix, but it still happens - rarely, but enough for it to be a PITA, and not feasible to retain this as her work phone, once she goes into private practice (not something envisaged when I bought it for her).
As mentioned, there are a number of other reports of this problem, but no decent fix - I'm really not convinced of the tapping solution, and there were no error messages when I got into the phone's diagnostics mode.
If I can't solve it soon I'll be looking at having to find her a new phone - this time it'll be an NZ-sourced mainstream model (even if parallel-imported, to reduce the likelihood of such a problem and, if it does happen, to have some legal rights in place to get it fixed! It's not that I don't think these Chinese-sourced phones don't offer very good value for money - it's just that they're possibly a little too flaky at this moment to provide an assurance of service!
