moxpearl: ... - MIUI will take some getting used to.

Is there any easy way to put Android on this phone? I was interested in it (for my wife) until I read it has MIUI. My (short) experience with a Huawei handset with their OS was enough to ensure I stay away from any system that deviates too much from stock Android.

sbiddle: I've got a Vodafone Smart Prime  here that I've been playing with over the weekend. IMHO this phone is an absolute steal for $149, and really makes me wonder why people bother importing phones when devices such as this are so cheap.

Yes it's not a high end device, but it's going to beat most midrange handsets on the market.

While I agree the Smart Prime's a great deal and is perfectly adequate, it's certainly not going to give the user a high-level experience that they may be able to get from one of these imported Chinese handsets. For example, the Prime is a fairly chunky phone, and the screen and camera aren't terrific. Yes, it's absolutely fine given the cost, but I think those importing these Chinese phones are after a lot more bang for only a bit more buck, and I can see the appeal.

Perhaps the Vodafone Smart Ultra's a better comparison - that seems to offer something closer to a higher-level experience for under $300, which is chump change compared to an NZ-sourced G4, S6 or similar. If only it had support for Spark's frequencies I'd be buying one for my wife...

I'm keen to hear the review on the xiaomi note 2 as its one of the phones I'm looking at. Have been doing a bit of research recently and it's doing my head in - I didn't realise there were so many options out there!

Can't decide between the elephone p7000, the Letv 1 (x600) and the aforementioned xiaomi. I'm basically looking for the one with the best camera (in the sub 400NZD bracket).

I wouldn't get the P7000 - the camera is average at best and the battery life has issues. I had to send mine back due to screen quality issues as well.

Apparently the Xiaomi Note 2 has a Samsung camera ... short of an iphone 6 camera, that's pretty good

I didn't realise they had battery life issues, mine is amazing. It is the only phone I can last a full 2 days without charging.

I'm a pretty heavy user:

~20mins calls
~50 txts
~3 hours music
~2 hours bluetooth
~1 hour google maps/GPS
~3 hours - other screen time/internet browsing

That is my typical daily usage and every other phone I own including the Galaxy S6 just about lasts me a full day so I was super impressed with P7000.

The only one small thing that annoyed my on the P7000 was the touch screen, I am a fairly quick typer and I noticed sometimes it would miss one of my letters - got really frustrating after a while.

Which version of Miui are you on? I upgraded an Mi2a which was lying around to V6 a few months back and was thoroughly impressed with it.  The Redmi Note2 has much more powerful hardware than the Mi2a so I'd expect it to be better.

Miui does take some getting used to at first, but it has been quite good - even when I tried it on my old Galaxy S back in the day.  They're getting better and better and the under the hood tweaks in V7 is pretty impressive - though like all firmware, will take some time to iron out the bugs.  V6 should be stable - just might be tweaking/optimising for the Helio X10 hardware.

it's saying 16.6.7.0

I don't mind Miui itself, however there are some things that are doing my head in.

- Will not let me download apps from the play store over a certain size; seems to be over 100mb or so.. it just fails to install with an error.
- Browser will randomly redirect to random Chinese spam sites, even on chrome.
- Keeps trying to install a couple of Chinese apps.

From my experience with Chinese phones, this will all be fixed via roms etc, however it is not the most pleasant of experiences at this stage.

Camera is good, REALLY good with things relatively close and close ups. I have not tried it for anything like landscapes, the camera is also extremely quick.
Battery is soso, I hope this can be optimized, full charge will last a day with moderate use.
GPS is the best I have used in a phone.
External speaker is pretty good.
Screen could be brighter

moxpearl: Which region setting ?

When I  ran up my Mi4i   it asked for a region and as NZ was not listed I used Singapore.  It's to do with the crapware that gets installed and how fast updates take place..  If I change my region to say India I get Indian crapware installed and from what I've seen on the Indian Mi4I FB page India gets updates after the likes of Singapore..
