No ipad he says... The fact is our ipad 2 (not air 2, ipad 2) still is very functional and had a great selection of apps to choose from, won't pay the latest games etc but hasn't been dropped on the scrap heap as per android who system. As previous poster started Samsung don't care they've got your money (and looking at shelling out on a tab s, ha ha!) Samsung win!

My 4 year old ASUS Transformer TF101 is currently rocking Android 5.1 due to the dedication of one XDA developer (Timduru). The device was abandoned by ASUS a long time ago but once I got over that and embraced the opportunity to experiment with custom ROMs. It does chug a bit because of its hardware but is still well usable.

Once again in this Android forum nobody cares what you do with your iDevice.

Thanks for prodding me to try CM.
Had never done it before, so somewhat hesitant, but I've popped my android custom rom cherry and now Its running Android 5.1, working well and virtually all apps are now available in the app store.

Pretty good outcome.

Interesting reading this thread.  My father in law has what I believe is this tablet in question.  I'll check it out when I'm next over there.

CM has always appealed as a way of ditching the locked in apps you couldn't uninstall, the bloatware.
If it opens opportunities to install newer apps previously locked out, then that really does warrant further investigation.

Did you by chance not have the option to screen cast to the chromecast device before?
That's his main complaint, in that a cheaper newer Samsung does, but his more expensive, and only slightly older model doesn't work with this.

Dairyxox: Hi All,

I've got one Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5110 16GB

Something fishy there

I have the Samsung Tab2  7" , Andoid 4.1.2 , so even older
No lack of apps, Ive just installed 2 new apps to test it.

There may be something else going on with your Tablet.

Yeah it didn't sound right to me either, hence making the thread
After doing all the OTA updates it was on Android 4.2.2

We've got lots of Samsung Tab2 7" at work, they're all 4.1.2 and are fine. I will definitely take care about applying future updates to those however. It would be a disaster if this happened to them.

Sorry I don't have a chromecast to be able to tell.

Agree on the iPad 2 comment.
Still incredibly functional for the bulk of what people want tablets for, eg mail, web, Facebook etc

This thread isn't meant to be a battle of the OS, if you have an Android device then take advantage of what you can do with a little research, Android is open source therefore if you have a well known brand there is generally a lot of Dev support.

Good to see you entered the world of custom Rom's its certainly made my old Galaxy Note 10.1 fly like a new one.

Kinda makes me glad I picked up a Nexus 7 (2012) it's now running Lollipop 5.1.1 so no app problems here I never liked the fact that Samsung just forget about devices after 12 months

I realise that the OP has found a solution that works for him, but here is another potential solution for other readers of this thread that aren't brave enough to go for custom ROMs.

1) Install App Backup & Restore on a 2nd Android device (such as your phone). App Backup & Restore
2) Install the app you desire on your 2nd Android.
3) Backup the desired app using App Backup & Restore (this creates a new APK file).
3) Copy the APK created across from your 2nd android device to your "incompatible" device via SD card, Bluetooth, Wifi, email or whatever suits you.
4) On "Incompatible" device, go to Settings>Application Setting> and tick "Unknown Sources" to allow installation of non-market applications.
5) Install the APK on the "incompatible" device. You can use another installation of App Backup & Restore, but I have had success simply running the APK and letting the Android installer handle it.

This trick used to work on the Amazon Fire, and might also work on other androids locked to proprietary App Stores.

I found this useful when I couldn't install news apps on my cheap tablet, because it didn't have GPS. Turns out, you don't need a GPS to read a news paper - who would have imagined eh?
