The free 2Talk plan on a VOIP app as mentioned, and then only pay for any extra calls as required?

Wade: I would say pay an extra $10/mth and step her up a plan otherwise it will end in pain or bloodshed :P

Another way to go and assuming you have a landline would be to look at going VOIP and setting mobile up to make/receive "landline" calls over 3G?

Interesting idea. How does one go about making calls on one's mobile using a VOIP home line? Is this possible with the standard Snap/2degrees fibre VOIP like we currently have?

I'll confirm next week :P

Am changing to 2D partly for this ability, apparantly there is a Fritz phone app that can configure itself and you dial out from within the app

2Talk allows more than one device per number, so you can have an ATA at home and the same number on an app on your smartphone.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how would I do this? I see how easy it is to set up a free 2talk acc, but can't find any mention on their site of a smartphone app. Does one use a third party app with one's 2talk settings in it? Thanks!

If you have an android phone there is already a SIP client built in.
Check under your phone settings

Are you sure that app allows calling via the mobile network? When I've tried it in the past it allowed me to make calls on my mobile using the wlan when connected to the Fritzbox. Having downloaded this again I can't see any settings that allow it to work away from the local network, but I'd love to be shown to be wrong!

There is a 2talk app but as I've already mentioned in this thread. Adore phone and Zoiper are better. I've been using this over 3G/4G for several years, and sometimes quality is great. Sometimes garbage. If you head over to the VoIP forum you might get some more pointers.

Silent Phone is an end-to-end encrypted calling app but provides a subscription option to get a phone number and the ability to call other real numbers. Details here https://silentcircle.com/pricing and here https://silentcircle.com/coverage.

Thanks for all the helpful posts. I've been off experimenting with a couple of the apps, and they were totally intuitive to set up. It looks like Lollipop has no built-in SIP phone client, so a third party app is needed on my phone. I've Tried the built in one on my wife's phone running 4.3 but it doesn't register with the settings I've tried; not nearly as straightforward as the other apps.

TBH, I find the design aesthetic of the 2talk app really tacky! It also doesn't seem to have any easy ability to close the app (not that I've found) but Adore, while a nicer app to use, isn't registering properly upon rebooting the phone. Will give the other app mentioned a go as well to see if that works better for me.

Thanks again.

2talk + Bria soft phone app

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

You might be right on the Fritz!App being WiFi only, I reread a thread i started in the 2D forum on Home Phone Plus and this was mentioned, however another person had managed to set up via SIP to work over mobile networks. I'm booked to switch providers on the 17th so will report back once I've (hopefully) made it all happen!

For different reasons to you I want to achieve the same thing, my 9yo does't use her phone enough to warrant a monthly pack but if I share my mobile data and set her mobile up to use our landline then we have a very cost effective solution to a minor problem :D

Stock Lollipop should have SIP, I know on my Smart Ultra you can setup a SIP account

Dialler> Settings> Call Settings> Phone Acct Settings

My phone -a G3 - isn't stock android, sadly, and the dialling app doesn't support SIP.

That said, I seem to now be having no problems with the 2talk and Adore apps registering on mobile data.

At a fundamental level, am I likely to get better quality calling from a solution like 2talk versus Viber/Spotify/Hangouts?
