Hi All,
I recently received a Z1 Xperia compact but it seems to have GPS issues. I got if from a respectable company in Auckland, and returned it under warranty. The brand new replacement has the exact same issues, I wrote about it in this thread: (same user name as here)

https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Compact/no-gps-fix-after-lollipop-update-in-Z3-compact/td-p/967188/highlight/true/page/4

I should confirm that I dont think the software updates have anything to do with it, as GPS performance is poor right out of the box with no updates installed.

Is anyone else in NZ having these issues? I do wonder if its a local issue due to the gps.config file being optimized for China region.

Thanks in advance

My Z3 kept thinking I was somewhere north of Blenheim (I'm in Auckland). Installing 'GPS Test' from the google play store and clearing AGPS data fixed that.

No issues with my wifes Z1C.  Though when I first got it I rooted it (to use TiBU) and consequently used one of the many GPS config aps to set her to Oceania rather than whatever it was.

Without reading your linked thread - have you run something like GPS status while outside for a couple of mins?

Thanks guys,

Yes have tried both GPS Test (clear APGS etc) and GPS Status, self diagnostic test, factory reset, PC Companion repair, service menu (on both units) etc etc. (Details in above link) My other phones get strong signals side by side, the Z1 very weak if at all.

I think rooting it and altering the gps.config file may well be the answer, but I worry about warranty if I do this, I'm leaning toward returning it for a refund tbh.

Just out of curiosity, what are your location settings set to?  High accuracy / battery saving / device only?

Tried high accuracy mainly, and satellite only, (lying on a table out doors for 20min) never battery save. No diff in terms of satellite signal strength. Strangely on the GPS test app it has way more satellites 'in view' than the other phones I have, it just has trouble locking them.

I see it's made in Malaysia, and I suspect its prepped for China market as the default user name has Asian characters. I think the problem is either the GPS.config file set to another region (it should still find the local satellites eventually tho right?) or a faulty batch.

I have now returned the second unit under warranty, and hope for a refund...
