Philer:

Hi,  This is my first post here so please excuse me if I don't get things entirely right!  But just as you have experienced some drawbacks, I'm getting some issues too.  I have a Meizu M3 note running on Android 5.1 and Flyme 5.1.11 0G that I bought from PB Tech about 7 months or so ago...and I really like the phone but there are a few things that are driving me crazy...things that the phone just does by itself.

1) the phone randomly changes its settings e.g. it will turn off wlan  or 4g, it will mute itself so I can't hear the phone ringing, or it will activate airplane mode, it will re-start itself in the middle of using Google maps - just for examples.  This is not about it getting nudged in my pocket, while random these things can happen while it's sat on the desk, or overnight.  Does anybody have an idea why....and hopefully a fix for this?  Thanks :)

2) when typing messages, emails and the like - it sometimes does not put in spaces between words.  I actually have to touch the space bar twice to get 1 space.  This is particularly prevalent when I'm typing text and then want to add in a number e.g. "see you at 12".  Also misses a starting space when putting in brackets.  This isn't a major issue - it's just really annoying having to go back through your message or email reply and re-do spaces.  Lastly with the keyboard it often does not auto capitalise.  Again, does anybody know of a setting or a way of making the keyboard function normally?

Cheers

Settings turning on and off by themselves definitely isn't normal behaviour. Recommend installing the latest stable build of Flyme 5 from here and giving the phone a factory reset. Alternatively, the latest beta version of Flyme 6 is available here.

Re: the keyboard, try using a different one like the Google Keyboard as a first port of call.

Hi,  I bought it from PB Technologies, Penrose.  I did think about taking it back to them but as the issues are random, I'm not sure how well I could demonstrate the problems to them.  Then I can across you guys and keeping my fingers crossed that maybe it's just some setting that I don't know about (or how to re-set if you think that would make it work reliably).  other than these issues I think the phone is actually great.

Hi 4G,  thanks you for your comments.  I'll try the Flyme version 6 as the phone tells me I have the latest 5 version.  Is there a previous thread where I can find out how to re-set the phone without bricking it?  If not, could you please advise if you have the time

Thanks

Settings > Storage > Factory Data Reset.

Be sure to back up anything you need from the device (Photos, text messages, et cetera) before resetting. :)

Bearing in mind that the beta is unfinished pre-release software and has a few bugs in and of itself, I'd try the factory reset first.

Hi NikT,  Well I backed up everything on my phone but luckily didn't need it.  Everything went according to your plan and the phone seems to be working great.  I'm now on Flyme 6 and Google keyboard and I couldn't be happier.  You are awesome mate.  Thank you :)

Brilliant, glad to hear it!

Flyme 6 is pretty neat. There'll be more frequent updates as Meizu gets closer to the final public release, but I've not found too many bugs so far.

Shopping for a replacement at the moment. Phone has become practically unusable.

Have approached Meizu PM at PB Tech off line. I still haven't heard back.

Bottom portion of the screen loses 'touch' about 80% of the time. Meaning no 'up swipe' of the screen; none of the keys on the lower part of the keyboard: space bar, , ',', '.', 'enter' are functional without rotating the phone; onscreen 'shutter' button (can't swap between still and video).

Sounds like a straightforward swap-out to me.

Who have you contacted, and through which channel?

I called and spoke with HS at head office. HS requested I email, which I did, listing all the issues I've had to date. Many of them are on this board.

Send me a 'pm' with another means of contact. My account and offsite contact details can be checked through my accounts at Penrose (E*****1) or Manukau (R****4). The latter can be filled in and confirmed by Calvin.

I'm having a couple of problems with my M3s running the latest Flyme 6 (as above). I would start a new thread but an existing M3S thread got locked by freitasm and linked to here so...

My issues are:

  1. Notifications - A lot of them weren't coming through. I tried switching background permissions from "Smart Background" to "Keep running in the background" for a bunch of apps but that didn't consistently help. So now I've tried switching Performance Mode from "Balance performance and endurance" to "Prioritize performance and display" which seems to be better, but only time will tell. Does anyone have any comment on that? I wonder what effect that will have on battery life?
  2. Compass/GPS - The compass never seems to calibrate. Most apps that use it tell me it's uncalibrated and allow me to calibrate, but it never "sticks". Also, perhaps related, GPS seems terrible, seldom get a lock in Maps or Uber (don't even see the Location icon in the status bar?). I have another app (GPS Test) which shows the Location icon in the status bar but takes forever to get a fix. I've tried clearing and updating AGPS but that hasn't really helped. I think that it's better after a restart, but that could be my imagination. Anyone with similar issues? Is it hardware or software?

Other than that, it's been great for a $180 phone! Any other glitches or tips I should know about? I'm wondering if it's worth rooting. I don't need it specifically yet and is the only way to unroot (I'm thinking in case I need an app that won't work with root) a full reset? Maybe I'll have to do a full reset later anyway when the public release of Flyme 6 comes out so that's not so important. Also, bummer than even with 6.7.3.3G, the Android version is stuck at 5.1. I guess that's not changing?

Edit: P.S. 3. Also, had a few contacts that got merged and I couldn't figure out how to unmerge them. Maybe couples that lived at the same address or same home phone? They are two separate people! They still appeared split in my Google Contacts so I just deleted the merged contact and added back two new contacts with completely different details. Any way to unmerge contacts?

Went to Penrose this afternoon and held my ground. It took 1/2 hour but I did walk away with a swap.

As in September, there was an insistence that I leave the phone with the service desk for them to 'run diagnostics'. I said that was unacceptable and showed them the second recommendation that the unit should qualify for a swap warranty. After a brief discussion in the background, the request was made that 'we' perform a factory reset to see if that would resolve the issue. For that to work, the team had to connect a mouse to the phone, as none of the required keys on the keyboard would respond. I think it was at this point that the penny dropped. And another phone was made available.

Initial observations: photos appear to be less fuzzy; glass over lens feels like glass (the original felt as if it flexed under my thumb nail)

MMS test will be tomorrow.

The other phone I was looking at is the Oppo R9s from 2Degrees. However when I discovered it ships with ColorOS with a locked bootloader (as per the M3 Note and Flyme), I abandoned the quest. What's wrong with a vanilla Android environment? Is what I'd like to know.
