DANOFDANGER: Its good to know that feeling is shared. Yea apple make good products, i think they are great for less avid and non tech savy people. Like our parents.
But yea i rape the hell out of software, abusing its potential top to bottom. "I want to be free".

No idea how old you are but I am firmly Gen X and actually worked in an office when there was (gasp!) no internet AT ALL and NO EMAIL and we had secretaries who took dictation and used a typewriter to type letters we sent out using a stamp...!

I will readily confess to not having the faintest idea what to do with software outside the boundary of "normal access" and that I probably have better than average grasp (at least for Mac and iOS) of how to use it within those bounds. I would never hack the software or anything like that as I would have absolutely no idea what I was doing. Even BB Code strikes me as something that should have been overlaid with a skin of app-like usability a decade or so ago!

This time I am however seriously considering the Note 7. I probably won't do much with the software other than explore some of the regularly accessible settings as I am sure they are more than adequate for me to get the device looking and behaving in a way that suits me. I like the pen input idea because I am old and write with fountain pens (and used to give my secretaries manuscript letters to type more often than dictation). I prefer writing and usually have a paper notebook with me.

I figure lets try something different and if I do not like it, well, I shall flog it and go back to iPhone when the 8 comes out (or maybe they will call it the 10?) this time next year. It's only a phone, after all, not a tattoo I have to live with forever!

If I read correctly, the Note 7 ships with Android Marshmallow, although Nougat is the latest iteration.

How would you get Nougat on a device and when would you expect to get it? I read that updates can be a bit hit and miss depending on carrier, location - even handset. That bit really isn't better than Apple.

Because its the latest Samsung Flagship - I am pretty sure it will be the 1st device Samsung updates to Nougat

So the wait wont be long (hopefully - coz the Telcos also have to approve it)

As mentioned I am carrying on with my Note 7 carefully, only because there is nothing else like it in NZ because of the S-Pen and note taking ability.

When I am out and about I can take notes right after a call, take down somebody's number if it has come up on my screen as private. My usage of the pen is huge after owning various Notes since 2012.

And the name Note does not relate just to taking pen written notes on the phone either. After some meetings I might take the pen out, which automatically opens a note taking screen, and rather than write my notes out, I will use voice and speak the key points. The phone of course saves it as a "Note". Back to office and any relevant points are there - as they happened so to speak!

There is nothing like a Samsung Note if you use it to its full potential. iPhones do not come close to the simplicity and ease of use of using a mobile to do anything you might need when away from the office.

I`m closing on 30. Born just after the first release of windows. I remember when those big brick phones the size of butter were around, you would be like "dont put that to your head, that might give you cancer." haha.

As you say, you have a better understanding than the average your age, at least i should think so with all the people i have met. I have seen some extremely illiterate people. But thats not their fault. Growing up with user interfaced systems, you pick up the design characteristic traits. I can go from many differently designed interfaces and pick it up almost instantly as long as its designed with the intuitive layout that most do. Its like working with a car, knowing how it works and then moving to a completely different model. All the parts are mostly the same. Just in a different layout.

But older people are a little left behind and find it difficult to catch up or learn it. Again not their fault. But this is why apple is more suited for such people. They don't need to have advanced settings or configuration or more options than they need. They just want something that works. Their products have always been designed as such. To be a extension of one self, like a tool.

Yea the pen is something i use a lot. It feels much more natural and satisfying than using the keyboard to write notes. I have hundreds of notes, i study a great deal in several fields and this is a great tool for such.

Like you said if it doesn't suit you can just go back to apple.

Well i have now processed my note 7 for a refund. Great phone, will be missed. But so much has permitted me to loose the joy that a new phone has. I'm sure if i still got it i would be happy, but i dont mind waiting for next years model.
Returned the case. Might give away the dbrand back sticker to a fellow member. Hands up anyone ?

I returned the Note 7. Am I supposed to get some sort of receipt that proves I have returned it?

I think I'll just rock on in there in a few weeks when the replacements are ready and say "Hi Guys - remember me? Trust me - I'm the guy who returned a N7 a few weeks ago when the recall first happened."
