Here's a good indication of how the public have reacted, the phones are still in stock on the US store, every other release has sold out within minutes.

This is true, but on the other hand they seem to be pushing this one way harder so may have finally nailed down those launch issues. Personally I'm really liking the look of it.

If Google support this phone as say Apple do the iPhone (i.e. 4yo iPhone 5 running current OS version) then i would definitely consider an XL, its a huge selling point,  its a powerful phone that will still be relevant in 3~4 years to all but maybe some powerusers, at present most android phones have been lucky to be current for 12~24mths.

Its not cheap but it looks like it is a premium handset, afterall HTC have been building solid hardware since original HTC One, its got decent specs, why should a Google phone be cheaper than a Samsung/Apple/HTC etc branded phone when all fairly consistently specced.

The secret sauce for Google will be to also release a mid level phone to capture the lion share of the Android market

The thing is that is looks like an iphone 6 clone, but not as elegant, with the antenna bands and aluminum caseing, earpiece slit, and relatively large bezels. It may have looked modern 3 years ago, but it looks dated compared to the samsung edge phones. The overall design is also not good, and looks like a mashup. If it was half the price it maybe interesting.

Awesome

Part of me wants to - though I would go to a Pixel not a Pixel XL. But my 6P is worth AU$400-450 at least to sell (even though only a few months old), so upgrading to even the base 32GB pixel would cost me $600+, and I just can't justify that for a phone that I see as inferior in a number of ways to the identically priced iPhone 7.

2 years. That's all Google are giving it. 2 years for a $1500 phone. Absolute idiocy

Thank's I'm in the same boat, got myself a 64GB when it just came out so I ended up paying $1200 for it at the time, I would only get something like $400 for it now if that since they sell $700 brand new. It's just not worth it, I will only get a new mobile if my 6P fails or the one after the Pixel comes out.

When you look at how Samsung have been pushing the boundaries with design and specs for the past two years, and the competition at the top end appears to be nothing more then an Apple clone, you can't help but feel that the mobile market is losing its "edge"!

I was hoping to see some competition here, some innovation. Sadly not this time around.

That's not what Google aim to do though with the Nexus/Pixel line.

I would expect the next iphone to be a bit of a game changer in terms of design. The fact is that most of these companies look at apple for design inspiration.  They want to roll out something special for the 10 year anniversary.. Although I think it is going to be somewhat similar to the Samsung design, with the edge screen. I expect they will totally get rid of the home button and top and bottom thick bezels, and the touch ID will be in the screen itself. I expect it will be a beautiful slab of glass and metal.

Its bezels are big ... but no bigger than the iPhone 7
