My wife's Samsung S2 is dying and she has finially admitted she needs a new phone.

What she wants is a phone to check emails, facebook, text and call people.
The hard part is she wants a good camera. She has owned several SLRs in the distance past so can recognize a below average shot, but these days will use the auto function 95% of the time.

Oh and spending money is not in her  blood - no way she will spring for a $1000+ phone.

Phablets are out as well.

So the budget is up to $500 - and $300 would make her happier.

Any thoughts on what to get?

From the research I have so far good options seem to be:

  • P9 lite
  • Moto G4 plus
  • Second hand Galaxy S6

If any one has thoughts, experiences (or even second hand phone that meets her needs) please chime in.

@MikeB4 has a s7 edge he wants to give to charity. Give him a solid offer. You won't best the camera on that.

I was in a very similar position - wife hates spending money on phones.

I had great success with the original Moto G, the Moto G2 was good but had bluetooth issues, camera was poor.

LG G3 had a nice screen but had battery issues and the camera was up and down.

Second hand Samsungs had pretty poor software release support.

Buying second hand Androids was hit and miss - lots of rooted parallel imports with all sorts of weird issues.

The chinese mid rangers look good, but then keep reading about really odd reliability issues (like GPS not working sometimes), or didn't support Spark LTE bands.

I had to admit defeat on finding a mid range Android that was actually reliable enough to not be a nightmare. Ended up with an 64GB iPhone 6 for $500. Does what it says on the box.

Just had some great success with a Redmi 4A, wife's Samsung S3 mini broke a few weeks ago and she is very happy with this.

Can it be second hand? If so you might getlucky and pick up a Samsung S7 variant, or like you say an S6 is definitely in that ballpark.

The camera on the S6 was pretty darn good at the time. The latest gen. hardware does best it, but will be getting another refresh early this year so the S7 and equivalent phones will be dropping in price, so keep that in mind.

Just a belated update - Ended up with a Moto G4 plus - PB Tech had one on sale for $400 a week or so ago.

Wife seems happy with it after a week using it. Camera is nice.

Might have to get one for myself :)
