I have used GsyncIt by Fieldston for a number of years to for two-way calendar and contacts sync between Outlook desktop and a gmail account has been quite stable and consistent. I always intend to switch to gmail or outlook.com from Xtra as primary email to get rid of this issue but gysncit works well so have stuck with this sync approach.

Thanks all for great suggestions.  Sounds like the third party apps would be the way to go.  Since starting to look into this I've found a dealbreaker - I use Airplay for my wireless home audio and without Airplay capability on Android (and the rest of the family on Apple) I think I'm stuck with Apple :(

I'm guessing your Outlook calendar is not attached to an Exchange email account? If it happens to be, using the Gmail app with Exchange ActiveSync will sync that calendar to your phone nicely.

Re setting up a static IP address - FYI I just checked with Spark and because I'm on a residential plan, they would charge me $15 per month for a static IP address!

BigPipe charges $45 for a lifetime static IP.

Thanks @Jay63 for reminding me of Gsyncit. I used it a number of years ago but wasn't using it while I had iPhones & iPad. Have been on Android the last year or so and Gsyncit would again be useful. I even found my old registration key but (understandably) it's now obsolete. Recalling my earlier contentment with Gsyncit I didn't hesitate to buy a new licence yesterday. All set up and working perfectly!

Fantastic.  Gsyncit may have an occasional hiccup but  the vast majority of the time just works happily in the background.  As an FYI, I use Gsyncit with my iPhone and iPad via a Gmail account  that I turn on for calendar and contacts only (not email) on each device.  Works quite well and integrates well in iOS contacts and calendar app too noting it sometimes takes a little while (less than an hour) for Apple device to update Google calendar.
