I'm considering getting an Amazon Fire 8 as an alternative to a used Ipad mini 2.

What are is the apps market like? Or is it easy to sideload google play apps?

This will be used solely for kids so just need kids apps and games and a media player to play media files I will load on the device/micro SD.

While i'm at it any other options in the tablet market for around $200?

I love my Amazon Devices, we have lots of them. I sideload using dropbox, but I don't usually bother since they don't update and the apps I want to use are frequently upgrading.

Any insights into the depth of the apps store especially with respect to kids?

Both my kids use amazon devices and an Ipad, it's rare for them to complain about an app being unavailable. I think Amazon App store is huge.
