It'll be interesting to see whether the refreshed Nokia models make their way to New Zealand because the Nokia 8 with a Qualcomm 845 running Oreo 8.1 would be a nice refresh.

Nokia 8 going for $649 at Noel Leeming

See https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/phones-and-gps/mobile-phones/nokia-nokia-8-sp-8-smartphone-blue/prod159206.html

Tempted to get this instead of waiting for the imminent refreshed version which would most likely cost NZ$1000.

What do you guys think?

I needed to replace my old Samsung S3 so I got myself a Nokia 5 today. After doing the Spark setup I enabled wifi. Within moments it started doing an apps update & the Oreo 8.1 update in the background. Once  it had finished this 1817.8 mb download it started to install the update that took maybe 15 minutes in total. After that the April Google security patch of 122.8 mb downloaded and installed.

So far so good. As it was only on Android 7.1.1 for a few minutes I can't comment on its speed. I took a few indoor photos & so far it seems that the low light performance might be slightly better than my old Samsung S3.

I got a Nokia 5 because some of the reviewers seemed to like it better than the Nokia 6. It seems to be a lot of phone for $249.00!

My Nokia 6 is now a month behind on its security patch. Again. And no sign of 8.1. Can't blame the SIM because it still has the same Spark SIM installed that opened the floodgate on the previous 2 months of updates as I mentioned earlier.

Just wanting to double check: when you say you updated your phone on the 29th, did you do that via the Check for updates method on the phone? Also, is it a TA-1033 you have, and what service provider was it on?

Sorry for delay, was overseas for a couple of weeks. I have TA-1025 with Vodafone, I updated it manually through recovery.

TLDR.

I tried different NZ providers, but TA-1025 did not update with any. May be it's gated off by model or IMEI, since TA-1025 is not intended for APAC region. The only way to get OTA updates for me is factory reset and boot without SIM installed, but it's too cumbersome to do every month. So I have a method to grab OTA update links, download update package and then install it through recovery.

Btw, when I was in Europe and put in a local SIM I got April security update over the air immediately.

PS. how do you get into the boot menu on this phone now? It was already convoluted in Nougat, but now with Oreo it seems to be impossible. All I can get is the "No Command" screen, and none of the instructions for getting from there to the boot menu work, not even the Nokia 6 specific ones.

When you get into "No command" screen press Volume UP + Power and then release Volume UP almost immediately.

Once a Nokia 5 (Prob 6 as well) has Oreo 8.1 upgrade you need to swipe left or right on the main camera screen to swap from camera mode to video camera mode. So easy when you know. Some other people had  not been able to figure this out & posted the solution!

Swiping at the bottom of the screen next to the two tiny dots also seems to work but very badly! About one success out of ten swipes.

I'm in same boat as you with my TA-1033 on Spark, March security patch on 8.0.0 is the latest I get.

I've just gone from Android 4.3 to Android 8.1 so there will be a lot for me to learn. It's similar to jumping from Windows 95 to Windows 7!

Same for my new Nokia 5. Size was 132 mb & it installed smoothly with no dramas. Notification was on my phone when I turned it on this morning.
