Sorry, just to clarify, are you talking about

Find iPhone (with green radar icon) for locating devices?
or
Find Friends (orange icon with two white figures) to locate persons?

'Find iPhone' give you the option to not only locate the device, but also ring the device, lock it and optionally erase it. Once enabled, this is always on.

'Find Friends' on the other hand is to notify you of the location of people and optionally notify you when they are in the vicinity of a specific location. This location sharing can be enabled for a limited time of indefinitely.

Nice idea, but appears to be something that requires an active action by the user to send their location to someone else. I could just text them and tell them where I am, but looking for the reverse...I want to be able to see where someone else is without them having to proactively activate anything at their end.

I am sensing a cross-platform app is going to be the way to go, but can't find one (yet).

I have the option to share real-time information "for 1 hour" or "Until I turn this off"

Probably about as close as you can get. Actually there was another app a few years back where you could request another parties location (ping?) so you'd request it, they'd get a notification and it was nice and easy to exchange.

This is the answer if all of you use Google. I use & rely on this feature. Works very well. I even share location with family members overseas.

yeah but easier to add google maps to iphones that some other random app to all. Since presumably the new android will use google maps by default.

Sorry was mistaken also, yes it does appear you can set it to auto. I guess my next concern is it will only work when the app is open and running using GPS constantly (battery drain?) it also requires the other user to be doing the same. Close but not quite the same I think.

I used an app called xFiLocator on Android to track a IOS device. You need to login with your Apple ID once and it will show where all your devices that are associated with it are located and you can beep them track them etc.

Same app works on Android as well.

Could just use the web interface both apps provide by default.
I do not suggest people use a third party to sign into the Apple ID to track their devices. Wonder what other info that "free" app is collecting to pay the bills.

Given your situation it sounds more sensible to stay within the Apple ecosystem, unless you really really need a feature provided by Android. You might get a slightly better screen, faster processor, or cheaper device, but the hassle of switching probably isn't worthwhile.

My on-line research indicates that there is something that blocks any Android based browser from accessing iCloud, so you cannot log in to use 'find my iphone' using the web interface. Not sure if the same restriction from Apple - Google.

Yes, I guess a bit optimistic expecting a solution between brands. Not sure it is a deal-breaker just yet.

We (my family) use the Life360 app.

Wife has a iPhone (boo hiss), I've got an Android (#TeamPixel), but it's supported on both.

You can even set it up to notify you when people reach certain locations and you can request an update to find where a person is. So it's basically a cross platform "find my phone".

Don't know if that helps or just pisses you off, as it's not technically what you asked for and there's nothing more annoying that some muppet jumping in on a thread with an answer that you didn't ask for I'm running out of breath now i'm going to show myself the door.

Yea we don't use any of the paying features. But I can imagine when our kids get older and have their own phones/places to be we'll upgrade for the "more than 2 notification spots" feature. Glad to have helped.

It looks like Google Maps can do this, see instructions at https://support.google.com/maps/answer/7326816?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

There are instructions there for Android and iOS, I imagine it would work cross platform.

While looking this up I found that Google Maps can remember when you parked and give you directions back there, and even set a timer so you don't overstay. A very handy function that I know I'll make use of in the future.

I share my location with my friend using google maps location sharing. He shares location with me. I use Android, he uses iOS. It works. I can't verify how 'real time' it is though.

This shows a very useful write up on how to use a google web interface (happily it used my saved google login) to locate your android device in a “Find my iPhone” kinda way... works great from my iPhone to find my sons Lenovo tablet, but obviously only if it’s online, which any phone would normally be anyway.

Its not very real time, and its not device specific so if you have several of them it will probably show the wrong one.
