Interesting... Using a device for a few weeks now and today decided to setup a new device. Tap each device, the new one correctly identify account and then offer to start fresh or restore from backup. It shows three backups, all devices I used in the last month - but not the one I actually use every day.

How long usually Android take between backups? Is there any way to force a backup?

Another alternative is the device I am using every day actually has a fault and never did a backup in first place.

Assuming it correctly registered itself in the device manager (I recall you having potential issues here previously?) and its enabled you can check the app settings are set right and toggle them on/off to do a upload again

Thanks... It's registered and looking at backup I see last App Data was copied this morning, and Call History a couple of days ago. Interestingly though this device was not offered as a restore source on the other device during setup.

Will reset again and see what happens...

Reset the new phone, this time logged in instead of using the tap-and-restore option. Same thing. The current devices says backup created on those dates, but it's not showing as an option.

Perhaps because the new device is on Android 7.1 and the old one on Android 8.0.

Quite probable; a lot of Android components store data in various DBs (SQLite, etc) that don't like going backwards in terms of versions.  If the backups are done in a "binary" style, then yeah, that'd cause problems with restoring to an older device - apps crash as the database engine won't read the newer DB format/version correctly.

Some software (Titanium Backup, for example) has the option to export data in an XML format which can be used to repopulate databases on older versions.

I occasionally had this issue when transitioning from Daily snapshots of CyanogenMod back to more "stable" Milestones if the milestone was forked from an earlier snapshot than my current daily.  Eventually, CyanogenMod started writing in their releases notes for Milestore releases a "don't install if you're using a daily > YYYMMDD" for this reason.

I had the same problem last week going from My Nexus 6P with 8.1 (beta) to my new Pixel 2 XL with 8.0
