Oblivian: I wonder if there is still some regionalisation in the NZ market.
Mines a PB. And there was 3 different skus. But all reporting compatible with NZ networks.
Its only recently I twigged the 2D and SP at the end of the description denoted the source stock

NZ-new P20/P20 Pro stock is identical no matter which telco distribution channel supplied it - all the same hardware and same software in the same packaging. The devices automatically configure for the NZ SIM inserted into them.

Oblivian:
Confirmed my earlier suspicions then. Just seemed odd to search during black friday for the model and find 3 diff skus and availability when the mail page showed 1.
Mixed with these guys not getting same updates just seems odd
Managing stock of the same product from multiple suppliers is fun times. Working on making the frontend presentation of that easier.
Updates may be gated by the SIM inserted, e.g. if 2degrees have approved an update but Spark and Vodafone have found an issue with it that requires further testing, it could just be pushed to units with 2degrees SIMs inside until the others give the green light. We've seen this behaviour from multiple vendors. OTAs also aren't rolled to 100% of eligible devices at once to reduce server load / allow more scope for catching any previously-undetected issues.

VF SIM/config for those following and wondering about deployment
i believe updates are done via IMEI numbers
my wife and I have identical phones (mate 9's) she gets updates 7-10 days before I do. both are on the same network.

The OnePlus USB Type-C to 3.5mm adapter that debuted alongside the 6T is a good choice. Tested on a P20 Pro with a Samsung 3.5mm headset and all works as expected, calling included, volume controls too.
I believe Apple's will be geared for their alternate interpretation of the banding on 3.5mm jacks (hence years of made-for-iPhone volume controls not working on Android devices), but I'm surprised calling didn't work.
