I'm just bummed that there is no dual sim in NZ like the mate pros had.

I was sold on the P30 until I saw the terrible night video quality. Take a look on YouTube. I am hoping this is because it is still on pre-production software. Otherwise Huawei have really improved their video quality overall.

freitasm:

We have a DSLR at home - an old Nikon D50 (around 15 years old now I think). We have a couple of lenses for different uses. We haven't taken the camera out of the bag in a couple of years now...

That's a bit like saying "I bought a large comfortable, powerful, Mercedes a few years ago, but since my wife bought her Suzuki Swift, I haven't used my Mercedes for a couple of years now."

Anyway, I still use my DSLR a lot because I have a printer that does large prints with ease (A3 and A2 size) and I enjoy filling up the house with large framed prints from my own photography. The detail and quality of these prints is amazing and far eclipses anything I can get from images taken with my very good mobile phone.

Also, if you have, say, a really sharp 40 megapixel image, you can substantially crop this image and still get a reasonable sized print from the crop which itself has great detail.

That's not to say I wouldn't mind buying a P30 for those occasions where I want a reasonable image in circumstances where I don't need to use my DSLR.

What I meant is that for our use the smartphone camera is on feature parity with the DSLR we have. That is all. It is still a great camera but these days we just use what is at hand and don't worry about carrying more stuff.

Well I've had a Nikon D800 which then I sidegraded to a Sony RX-1. Then eventually I stopped using that and just used my yearly large iPhone upgrades. The portability matters more for me as I have it everywhere I go, but it still can't beat the RX-1 for quality.

The telco deals doesn't sound too bad actually. The P30 Pro actually comes around to ~ $1097!

freitasm: Vodafone offer:

The Huawei P30 Series devices are Huawei’s most advanced camera smartphones to date, with the innovative Huawei SuperSpectrum Sensor, Huawei SuperZoom lens, and better image stabilization technology.

I feel the Huawei P30 Pro is over priced, if the the Mate series is the flagship it leaves no room.

How much did you pay for an s10? They aint that much more, unless you buy retail like PB tech.

Despite the price, I had a feel today and its very close in feel to the s10 but quite far behind the iphone in build and feel. also it is much fatter, noticeably by eye. in saying that, the light blue shimmer colour looks insanely good in real life. So beauty is in the eye of the beholder but this bad babe could lose some change in the trunk.

So given what I know about the phones internals and cameras, if i can get this $1299 online I might just hit it. It doesnt replace my apsc mirroless with an f1.4 lens and definitely not my ff mirrorless, but i think it competes with my sony rx100

No doubt, see my thoughts above.  but it competes in the 4k deparment with the sony 1 inch sensor cameras.

So 2 degrees is doing $401 off, plus a speaker, plus the watch?

Thats the best deal right?

I might be wrong, some places have the pricing on point. I wish vodafone had the same deal with the speaker. 2 degrees lets me down badly when ive used their sims.

DSLR talk????? WHAT, its 2019, DSLRs are being replaced by mirrorless Full Frame which is half the size, Canons is the best imo because you can use the EF DSLR lenses easier, like the EOS R or RP if you want the latest 5d sensor.

So for me this replaces my walk about camera but not even close to a Full Frame sensor and f1.4-1.8 lens, will be 20 years before they get sensors that small to produce pro level quality

Lol wife reminded me I have staff discount that works at Noel leeming(not employee there) and that we had true rewards points from credit card. So gave up the freebies I didn't need and got pro there.

Still get the watch which was all I wanted. Surprised no one offered charge pad.

And now to wait.

Had a quick play in pbtech me will be a great upgrade from mate 9.

Yes, it's the "carrying more stuff" problem that can be a nuisance when travelling overseas etc. And I suppose the fact that huge numbers of images are taken every day around the world on mobile phones shows that most people aren't too interested in blowing up their images to make 50-inch wide prints! I guess all this must be resulting in a decline of DSLR sales?

Mobile phones can do just about everything, but I'd like mine to be able to tell me the air temperature at my location without simply transferring me to the MET site or similar. Well, perhaps they already do that?

Personally, due to Mirrorless Cameras now featuring DSLR size full frame sensors, there is no lonnger the bulk hassle. However, a person who uses Auto settings should never be buying a DSLR or now a new Mirrorless Full Frame camera. You still have to carry a backpack, or bag, for your lenses, tripod etc.

The p30 pro is never going to compete with the above, but its not trying to, its replacing RGB with RYB then putting the green back in afterward thanks to snazzy smart people beyond our intelligence factor. Using RYB allows the lower light.

I wonder if this is why someone mentioned low light didnt look so good in video, perhaps the algorithim to put the green back in just messed up depending on the Vlog type they chose?

So for me, 3 new features Im impressed by

The split screen zoom and normal lens mode
The Vlog changes able to be done in camera, but I do wonder if it save vlog or slog? If you want to use premiere pro instead.
The measuring tool, you can accurately measure things with the 4th camera, like a table or a persons height, or if building, the width of a doorway etc. Very very cool.

Do any of the carrier deals allow you to buy without being locked into a plan? For me thats not saving $400. Looks like Spark might.

Grrr why doesn't 1 phone just have everything I want lol

P30 - no IP68, no fast charging, but has 3.5mm jack

P30 Pro - IP68, fast charging, no 3.5mm but has an infrared port??

For the record I am not concerned about the camera

Anyone know if we will be able to drop stock Android on to the P30's

Clint

Edit: does anyone know if Vodafone let's you pay off the interest free early with no penalty?

Looks like you can get the 2degrees $400 off and bonus headphones and watch at Noel Leeming if you use the code at the top of page.

edit: Confirmed you can buy from NL with 2D and cancel after a month and still get $400 off

This seems like the best deal around.

Wish it was dual sim though.
