Considering you can probably buy an iphone XR and an ipad pro for cheaper, both which should offer significantly better experience, I don't know why people would look at the Fold 1st generation.

Even better still ... considering you can buy a S10e and an Tab S5 for cheaper (than a fold or iPhone XR/iPad pro combo) both which should offer significantly better experience, I don't know why people would look at the Fold 1st generation.

If no one jumps on ,or buys it there will be no generation 2.

This is like when note came out ,no one will ever buy a big phone what a joke ...galaxy edge I think was called few years back that was innovation but didnt really work out ...
Have to do the hard yards ,they hope public picks it up

I can't see there not being a version two. The problem is that they would know that the current gen is going to be a hard sell, because it is so half baked. It is almost like 1st gen users will be beta testers, because it is such a rough product. Apple wouldn't ever release a product like this that is so fugly, so they are a good 3 years away from such a device if they go down that route.

In some ways such a product potentially can do more harm than good if it is a failure. Kind of reminds me of the Apple newton. It is a product that is a head of its time.

Enough people will buy the first Gen as a status symbol to warrant a gen 2 (and subsequent lower-priced future versions for practical users).

Did anyone watch the Samsung livestream event? The audience was audibly disappointed when they announced the price tag. Also I think a lot of people were disappointed with the design because Samsung themselves teased the below folding phone only a month ago showing a big front display and slim bezels in one of their own youtube videos, so the design we actually got by comparison was a disappointment.

Also, Huawei and Xiaomi are expected to be announcing their foldable designs at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain over the next few days, and rumour is they may undercut Samsung Fold's price tag significantly, but we'll have to wait and see if the rumours are true. So anyone who is considering a Fold should probably wait to see what the competition has. The Fold doesn't drop for a few months anyway so who knows what will come out by then. Leaks and teasers of these other manufacturers designs also suggest their screens will fold on the outside meaning you still get a large screen when closed. If you haven't seen it already check out Xiaomi President Lin Bin using their foldable concept here

Yeah, the photo wasn't even close. I suspect that that is eventually what it will look like, but probably a good 5 years off. The current one reminds me of a very early prototype.

I'm not so sure.
The Huawei has one foldable screen which is exposed, even while on phone mode, and as such will be more susceptible to damage. So you will need to keep it in a cover
The X screen is bigger and appears better in tab mode. The price even more eye watering

While the phone screen on the Samsung is big enough for phone functions, it's size and the notch on the tab screen seem to be what has garnered the most criticism. Especially since their pre announcment teasers showed a bigger phone screen when closed.
I hope there are enough early adopters for both versions of the foldable that manufacturers don't just shelve the idea. If Samsung can persevere they can probably produce a device in the future that looks good as well as being functional.

If I remember correctly the first Galaxy Note was criticised as too big for a phone and who needs a stylus anyway.

Definitely looks like a sleek design seems more premium look to it ,compared to Huawei x which is costing around $3700 bad.... definitely won't be buying that for that price.
Here more close up on fold .

Just watched a video from MWC2019. It showed folding phone concepts from ZTE and TCL as well. So there is a chance this form factor may have some legs.
Even more so in three years time when Apple 'invents' it and does it properly😉
