It's not just new functionalities but also security updates etc. And I am still shellshocked by LG's QA (previous Nexus 5X owner with bootloop of death exactly one year after purchase)
Rooting/unlocked bootloader isn't the ideal answer as a lot of Banking apps require unrooted device to operate and I also dont want to run the risk of bricking my 1k device.
My experience with the G3 (which developed severe faults after 1 year) has also put me off ever buying another LG phone.
This, the G3 was an awesome phone but the boot loop issues I had with it and LG's initial response... never again.
G3 is IS an awesome phone. I'm still using it. I have a Huawei P30 Pro sitting on my bedside table awaiting a screen protector to arrive. I just can't be bothered swapping my SIM over yet. The G3 is doing me just fine.
NikT:
Press release for the LG G8S went out yesterday, specs & details are up on the LG UK site.
Coming soon, stay tuned.
Not a bad list of specs, though will be interesting to see how it translates in reviews since that seems to have been where LG seems to be stumbling of late. And the G8 seems to have done OK, but didn't set anyone's world on fire.
So looks like the screen, speaker, camera, and battery/charging have been cost cut compared to the G8.
Price point will be interesting though, ~$1000? I guess some killer bundle deals like you guys normally do as well.
Kopkiwi:
So only the G8S? No full G8?
The regular flavour G8 is limited to the US (for dual camera) and South Korea (for triple camera).
Rest of world gets the G8S instead.
Despite what the measurements appear like on spec sheets, the G8S is a significantly larger and (critically) wider device than the G8 with a different aspect ratio, so while the G8 would have been too small for my tastes, the G8S is very comfortable to type on. Plus dual speakers, triple camera for everyone, and better battery life.
I have a G8S on hand if there's anything you'd like to know. Release details are coming soon.

How those cameras compare to what you've played with lately Huawei, Samsung and OnePlus wise?
everybodylovesfebs: I'm looking for an upgrade to my 2+ years old V30. I'm a heavy user of dual SIM feature and been reading that there are dual SIM active phones out there instead of my dual standby.
Is this true? To be honest I'm very happy with the v30 if I didn't know that other brands are all already a version of Android ahead than me and my last update was 1.5 years ago. I'm also a very camera heavy user and GCam is the only reason that I haven't upgraded the phone. Thanks to Google computational photography, my old phone camera is still decent compared to today's competition!
A phone with s10 size, LG cameras, Snapdragon 855 for GCam and dual SIM active would be magic!
Pie is coming to the V30! Beta build leaked the other day. I'll check with LG to find out the schedule for the local variant, unfortunately they have to deal with AU telcos which takes a while to get through.
AS for DSDA: There are essentially no more Dual SIM Dual Active devices in the market, the last one was the Huawei Mate 8 Dual SIM. Everything else out there and since is Dual SIM Dual Standby.

Oh that is great news! To be brutally honest I don't think I "need" another phone, thanks to GCam updates. Normal lens + UltraWide are the only ones I really need considering GCam have good portrait modes to make up for lack of a dedicated tele lens.
When I first purchased the V30, I thought the size of it was perfect, just the right amount of height and width. But lately been using a bit of iPhone X for work and starting to prefer it's one-hand usability.
S10 is the closest phone I can find which could be a decent replacement for V30 and the NZ Exynos version even has DSDA from the specs list! But I really wanted the Snapdragon 855 for GCam which is the G9730 Asian version but unfortunately the Snapdragon version doesn't have DSDA. So back to square one!
Anyway back to V30, when I'm on a call on SIM1 but 4G data is set to SIM2, my internet drops out until I finish the call. Is this a limitation of dual standy-by or V30? I tried to read up on it but cannot get my head around to it.

I agree the G3 was great, then I had the bootloop issues. Got a used G4 from a friend - again boot loop issues while I was away on holiday. Very annoying so got a Xiamoi Redmi 4A to tide me over
Kept badgering LG helpline via online chat based in OZ and after a week , I got told to send them in for repairs in NZ for free. Mind you they both were out of the warranty period. (Harvey Norman was useless and kept fobbing me off to LG). All 2 phones repaired and G4 was given away but the G3 is kept as backup.
Now on a used LG V20 bought on TradeMe and I love it. No plan to upgrade until this one dies. So much choice in the market for mobiles - my head aches!

The V30 truly is an ergonomic marvel. I'd admired LG phones from afar for years but there was always something that held me back until the V30 - it went on to become my favourite phone yet thanks to the ergonomics + haptics + camera + battery life. Still a lovely device.
For the record the dual SIM S10/+ is not DSDA, I have a dual SIM Exynos S10+ on hand (Samsung NZ made a limited run of them available!) and it's Dual SIM Dual Standby like the rest. Not sure where that spec came from on some international stores' listings but it's unfortunately not the case.
33coupe: I only sold my g pro 2 (import) because spark network didn't work and I wanted to buy Spotify premium for half price.
Omg I miss the double tap feature. Split screen was good, typing on screen was even better.
Might have to check them out again for the gf. She's after a budgetish phone (or second hand flagship)
Double tap to wake and sleep is so good, there's a rhythm to checking the device and banging out an email or a message that no other brands have quite managed to nail for me.
Barring any last-minute complications, stand by for the G8S at the end of this week.

Looks like the G8s has launched at PeanutButterjellytimeTech for $999
Not a bad phone for the price, if I was in the market I would be taking a good look at it.
While some of the features are a bit gimmick-y, a SD 855 + 6GB RAM + 128GB storage combo would be a pretty solid workhorse.
As long as the screen doesn't sh!t the bed and LG continues updating it of course.

Screen probably will be all good, still one of the best oleds screens out there. However, updates is a big IF.. I honestly hate LG for not providing required security updates at the least. Screw the Android feature updates, at least give us the security ones!
Article released today said LG are releasing security updates for phones as far back as the V10. Hopefully that's a sign of a positive change in the right direction for them and firmware updates.
